On the one hand, I like the honest portrayal of Sensory Processing Disorder and the real emotions that Lou experiences. On the other hand, poverty is not synonymous with neglect, a point which is not addressed well enough in my opinion. In fact, the main things she seems to like about being at her aunt's and uncle's are having an iphone, eating enough, and sleeping in a nice bed. These are all nice, but though her anger at her mother for not accepting family support feels genuine to a 12 year old, readers are given no other viewpoints to contrast it with. Was her mother neglectful, or simply poor? Maybe neglectful, but in my opinion the case isn't made well enough.
