Very sweet, if a little moralizing

Informative, and interesting. I enjoyed what was here. On the other hand, I think it's possible that hte author was thinking too delicately of her youthful audience when writing, and spared us any details deemed too upsetting. On the one hand I see that, on the other hand this allows the reader to think that the parents and children described were all just individuals making choices, instead of seeing the broader picture of poverty, illness, societal norms, and so on that created this boom of children in need of homes.

Alice in Wonderland meets Anishinaabe trickster tales in the form of the white rabbit. Queen of Hearts as colonizing white person. I loved this whole thing! Wish it was longer.

I love a good end-times setup, and I love the grownups are lying liars trope. The magic is cool (though not well explained) and I very much enjoy a world with magic in it where our main character isn't magical. Thw writing is compelling, as well. Where this falls apart is in the conclusion, which is to say that the climax should, I feel, be either more climactic or wrap up more ends, or both. I also feel like the
budding romance
is extraneous and unnecessary, but it is sweet so I guess it's ok. A very interesting world that I would love to spend more time in, with a bit of a weak finish.

Maybe good if you like intricately described fight scenes. personally I felt there was much too little emotional depth for me to care about the characters, and way too much along the lines of "she pivoted on her heel to swing her staff in a backhand stroke" and way too little real emotional interaction between the characters. I got bored, which shouldn't happen in a high-stakes fight between demigods and multidimensional bad guys.

Fails to deliver on the promise of the previous two in the series, mostly because of it's disjointed nature. The imagery is still beautiful, the thoughts still somewhat profound, but they feel disorganized.  Unlike the other two, which I could hand to a child who wouldn't get the deep parts but could still follow the story, this book can only be read by someone who wants aphorisms on life, not someone who wants to follow a storyline, and that's a real loss.

I enjoyed the read, but kind of wished it had more adventure if it was going to be an adventure novel, or more romance if it was going to be a romance. As it is it hits very lightly on both. Myself, I think in this world of dystopian wild west with queer librarians saving everybody, I think Id' opt for more adventure. Still, I love the heartwarming realness of the character coming out to herself, and coming to understand that she's not a burden on society.
