The Myth of the Spoiled Child: Coddled Kids, Helicopter Parents, and Other Phony Crises

Alfie Kohn

DID NOT FINISH: 23%

Even skimming, it was just too dully written, not conversational or interesting in the least. On the whole I think I agree with what he's saying, but I'm too bored to sit her and read more of him saying it.

A lovely gentle portrait of the experience of having an incarcerated loved one. I especially appreciate that the author is speaking form her own experience.

Not quite a biography, but a beautiful story that does not skip over the harsher aspects of Willie Johnson's life just because it is written for children.
funny informative lighthearted fast-paced

I especially appreciate this line, on the page about the British Museum: "Some items have been looted and then stolen or sold. You can find artifacts from countries that were colonized in history museums on the other side of the planet!" The word "colonized" is even in the glossary at the end of the book! This is a great example of how history education should be done.
informative inspiring relaxing medium-paced

A delightful bio of Margaret Wise Brown, written with the full understanding that as a children's book has to be entertainingly written and not just informative, and the skills with which to make it so. I also like how her being bi was not glossed over or stressed, just part of her life like any other part.

A solid sequel, this book takes on another issue, and does it with intersectionality and integrity. Well done.

A strong start for a new author. Leans a bit too heavily on familiar tropes to close the story arc, but there are bloodthirsty unicorns, so I'll forgive it.

A solidly fun read, but nothing earth shattering Still, I'm not always going for earth shattering and this was a very cozy mystery.

A serious gut punch of a book. Beautiful, and will knock the wind out of you. Some very sweet characters caring for each other in the best ways they can, everyone trying their best in their own clumsy ways. I took away one star for
the idea that after the first big breakthrough you might just be done with therapy and not need it anymore.

Very good, and intriguing to read a book from the perspective of a machine. I do wish that some of hte magical realism innate in having the machines have consciousness and some undescribed way to communicate was better fleshed out. I also coudl wish for a more momentous ending. But it's still very compelling and an enjoyable read that keeps you interested the whole time.
