Morrigan continues to be utterly delightfully dour, finds friends, learns magic tricks, and this series settles into being a school story. I'm ok with that. It's a familiar sub-genre, the magical school, and one I adore. It does take away form the sense of utter oddity that I first had when I encountered Nevermoor, which is a bit of a bummer, but it doesn't take away form my joy at having more of it. The plot is well crafted and tightly paced, multiple characters develop and grow, and the world-building is entirely on-point.
A bit uneven, as is often the case with anthologies, but I enjoyed the ways these stories were loosely connected in various ways, and the tales are all very heartfelt. They are also very firmly lower mid-grade in writing style, which I appreciate, as it means I can hand this book to more kids.
Very fun. The message, which I think is actually done with a light hand and quite well, still feels pretty heavy in this pandemic-age, and that is something the author addressed in an afterward. It was written before the pandemic, but...it definitely resonates.
I'm honestly a bit tired of this sub-genre of fantasy where a set of traditional beliefs is real and so the ancient gods need a child to save something or be someone etc, popularized by [a:Riordan Rick|21463911|Riordan Rick|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]. But this is a good rendition of it, and I appreciate that it's Hindu gods and not yet another Greek/Roman mythology. Definitely will hand to children who want similar adventures.
Unfortunately not Gail Carson Levine's best, many others are better. I get where she's going with the overclass/underclass, but it's like talking about race without discussing race, which doesn't really work. I also don't love the ending.
Fine enough, for what it is. This is not my type of fantasy.
So much fun! I adore the budding romance, and the bunnies are cute in addition to chaos incarnate. Definitely going to read any sequels!
Very sweet, and well paced. A bit silly of a conclusion, but kids will like it.
Got bogged down near the end, but I finished through. Nice "spaceships and bad guys" your novel without too much bloodshed.
