Full of factoids while also being readable in one read-aloud sitting, which is a difficult balance to strike. Plus ideas for where to explore listed in the back!

Clearly and succinctly told story of science, with beautiful illustrations

Solid, but lacks the brilliance of A Family is a Family is a Family.

Read pre-publication on an eARC through NetGalley

Such a believable quirky child, with a lovely supporting cast. I adore the consent baked into the romance, so steadily always there. I also live Mary's clarity of mind that the abuse she suffers is no one's fault but her father's, even tho it isn't that true to life I think it's worth it for the benefit of the reader. Also, I mean, who can resist a book where the queer librarian aunt saves the day? Not this queer librarian.

That said, I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because I really wish I knew more about submarines after reading a book where the kid obsessively builds submarines. Why no technicalities? I know so much now about Joan of Arc, why not similar riffs on the character's other primary interest? I also felt the ending was a bit too neat, even tho I appreciated the happiness.

The world is lovely and uncomplicated while avoiding feeling derivative, the twist is twisty enough that I didn't see it coming too early, and the ending open enough to intrigue me into wanting more without annoying me with loose chads. Plus, the race and class discussions are well done--not overshadowing the magic and not being ignored either, just integral to life in the way these things are. In short, this is a wonderful series opener that I can see myself handing to many children.

I have such a love/hate with novels in verse. Such soaring emotions! Such a lovely quick paced read! So few details!!!! I really really need more information about the
Spoilerreuniting with family. Was everyone safe? What happened in the relocation? What excuse was used to part people from their phones?
and a=I also want more details about
Spoiler the 3rd year, which is barely glanced over in a handful of pages.
But wanting more is also evidence of a strong interest built, so on the whole this is a solid and emotionally truthful book.

I have so many conflicted feelings about this. Wonderful mythologies! Well realized characters! Magic and hijinks! No good conclusion and the story just hangs! Arg. But still, I'll read the sequel for sure.

I've read many water cycle books with my kiddo, but they never piqued interest. This one is perfect as a read-aloud bedtime story, personified enough to make sense without sacrificing the science, and all-round perfect. Not only my 6 year old (who I got it for) but even my 3 year old is interested, and enjoys discussing the cloud party happening when we see a storm on the horizon. Terrific book, will recommend to teachers as well as parents and kids.

Totally solid fun. Doesn't do my favorite time travel things, but still a good read.

So so sweet. Not as fully put together as the first in the series, but the art is amazing and I love how all the characters are kind and caring to one another, without exception. A lovely piece about finding your place in the world.
