When I read Vicious last year, I didn't think the upcoming sequel would be able to top it, and how wrong I was. This is a spoiler free review.

I will admit to initially struggling, but I believe this was due to starting then putting the book down to read another YA new release, so when I did pick it back up I didn't think it could come anywhere close to how I felt about Vicious, but once it got going, it really got going and I couldn't put it down. I finished the final 'part' of the book, 170 pages in one sitting, it was that engaging.

It was great to see everyone again, and I will admit to my feelings about a few characters changing. I liked Schwab's use of minor characters who appeared in book 1, and it was really nice to see them come into their own and how they were utilised in the plot.

Considering I had never heard of V.E. Schwab until I buddy read her Shades of Magic series, she is now a firm favourite of mine and I can't wait for book 3 of the Villains series/universe.

Absolutely stunning.

Once again, amazing. I had forgotten so much about this one, I thibjits my favourite of the series 💌

Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury UK for giving me a chance to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this YA fantasy Beauty and The Beast re-telling.  The synopsis sounded right up my street and I was really excited to get into it.

The story centers on Prince Rhen of Emberfall and Harper who is from our world.  An unfortunate encounter between Harper and Rhen's one and only remaining guard, Grey, leaves Harper reeling and most definitely not in DC anymore.

It's made very clear from the start that this is Rhen's last 'season' of which there have been hundreds, though time outside of his castles estate is passing much slower than within.  I felt like the story was almost made to seem stagnant at the start to reflect on Rhen's state of mind, he almost goes through the motions of his life, so when Grey appears with a very angry Harper, brandishing an iron bar, I think they both realised pretty sharpish that maybe this season wasn't going to go quite to plan.

I really liked the addition of Freya and Jamison into Ironrose Castle; they added a bit more to the story, as well as Zo.  It was really nice to see how both Rhen and Harper reacted around other people; especially with Harper the driving force behind most of Ironrose's new residents.  Rhen and Grey's relationship is also really well written, and you could tell how fiercely loyal a person Grey is.

The story wove together very well and I actually couldn't put it down when I hit the final 40%, which I read in one go.  Really well done - and that epilogue, wow, I can't wait to read more from this universe and find out all the information after the epilogue!

Age Range

I’d say that this book is marketed at the YA category; so would suit ages 13+

Finally – Would I Recommend It?

Yes definitely – I love a good retelling and this is definitely up there as a favourite.  I can't wait a whole year for the sequel, it's too long! A Heart So Fierce and Broken, which is set for release in January 2020.  Also, the paperback is to die for, so pretty!

4/5 ✰

After reading The Cruel Prince in one sitting last year, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. The story picks up around 5 months after the events at the end of The Cruel Prince and the story sucked me in so it felt like I had read The Cruel Prince just yesterday.

Once again Jude we see Jude try to navigate her life in Faerie, only this time the stakes are much higher, and not just for herself. She has schemes upon schemes in play and from very early on you can tell that the strain is beginning to show. I liked that some fairly minor characters from the first book made reappearances and I also felt that the new characters introduced were good additions.

Due to real life getting in the way, I read this one in 4 sittings, but I have to say that it was a huge struggle to put it down each time as I just wanted to keep reading. I don't know what it is about Holly Black's prose but it always sweeps me away. Roll on January 2020 for the next book in the series.

Ah so good!

Amazing. What a beautiful story.

Stunning, I'm blown away by the start of this trilogy. I love Emma and all of the Blackthorns. I really liked the faster pacing to this series opener, and the overall more grown up feel that it has. The appearances from characters from TID and TMI were welcome additions too. Can't wait to read on with Lord of Shadows.
