This was a really interesting read. Are You Listening? is a roadtrip book centered on two acquaintances who encounter a cat and some unexpected events in West Texas. You slowly learn more about the characters as they get to know each other. But more than that, this book says a lot about grief and trauma in subtle ways. This book is beautiful in how it is slightly unsettling, slightly unresolved. It is a piece of the story - a piece of their stories. As much as I wish I could know more, that feels intentional and it works very well. I definitely recommend this book. CWs for grief, parental death (not occurring on the page), and sexual assault (not occurring on the page)

This book was so beautiful. It showed a lot of honest problems that can occur, but the relationship problems aren't really what spoke to me. The way that they show internalized homophobia and how it can impact someone. Unfortunately, the last quarter of the book was quite rushed. I would have loved to see that part of their story in the same detail as the beginning of the book. If that pacing had been more even, it would have gotten five stars.

This is an incredible collection of poetry. This covers topics from family to generational trauma to religion to sexuality and more. There is profound sadness and grief, but also light, love, a journey to self-love, and so much power and strength. I am in love with everything about this book - from the writing style to the visual aesthetic.

This was a very character-driven coming-of-age story that deals with grief, friendship, and sexuality - among other things. While I like the understated nature of the story and the way they explored the themes, there was something missing.  The connection of John’s sexuality being linked to his suicide and Kim’s feelings about his death and her sexuality seemed like it should have been explored more. Additionally, there were a number of disordered eating behaviors that I thought would be addressed, but weren’t.

There were some things about the plot specifically that was confusing. It was unclear to me if the affair with the teacher was Kim imagining or if it happened. They do show a panel with them kissing but I’m not sure if it’s a part of the dream sequence. This by itself is enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth because I detest student/teacher relationships. I imagine this confusion was intentional, but the topic that it related to was one that I am really uncomfortable with.

I did enjoy the nostalgic feel to the story. The slower pace and details reminiscent of the late 80s/early 90s provided an interesting atmosphere.

The art style wasn’t my favorite, but there were still parts that I really appreciated. Over all, I liked the book, but I think it was a bit underdeveloped.

This was a phenomenal beginning to a series. The plot is totally engaging. There are themes of family and friendship as well as interesting relationship dynamics. I am obsessed! There were some parts that were a little difficult to follow, which knocked it down a bit, but the majority of it is nothing but amazing.
