An okay book, but not really my type of book.
I loved the Asian theme of this book, even if at times the language was a little hard to get my head around.
Ah Ma was a great character, very interesting.
The twists and turns kept things moving, and on your toes.
But it’s not really my type. An okay book.

This was an okay book, a super fast read.
But fast was everything to this book. Everything happened so fast, and felt super rushed.
I feel like we dove straight into the story and didn’t really get any background into Mickey. It was sort of explained as it went on, but I feel like if the time had been taken to breathe, it would’ve been better.
There were huge jumps in time and info dumps and I was more than disappointed we saw nothing happen between Christmas and June, when arguably we could’ve seen the most growth.
I loved the mental health aspect of this book and the diversity, but Mickey’s depression never felt like we got “closure” or saw the affects of his medication and therapy.
I wanted to love this book, and looked forward to reading it, unfortunately it was a let down for me.

Lord, this book was hard work! I almost dnfed it, but I was over halfway and forced myself to finish. I never force myself to finish books.
I felt like this want so much a story as a recitation of facts and events. Everything felt like it was being told to me. There were info dumps galore and I didn’t connect to any of the characters. I wonder if that’s because pains were taken to be historically accurate?
For whatever reason, I really didn’t enjoy this book. I wanted to, but it was a slog.

I really liked this book! SO much more than the first one too. I’m fact, it makes my issues with the first book so much bigger as this one is so better paced. Maybe it’s because I’m familiar with the world now and don’t have to think about things, but it does still get bogged down, especially with the numinartra and cards and things.
But still, much more likeable.
I loved the bigger presence of the Rook in this book. It was one of the things missing from the first book.
I loved Ren and Tess and Sedge.
I loved getting to know Vargo better, and Alcius was perfect.
I hope things continue in this vein and I can’t wait for the third book!

I really enjoyed this book and this duo!
I loved the characters, Raiden especially, as well as little Rosalyn.
I did think, however, that everything in this book happened a little too easily and too simply. It was fairly unsophisticated and felt as if the author ran out of ideas and simply wanted this book to be done.
Still, I did enjoy it immensely and am glad I took the time to read it!

I really liked this book!
I like Amaya and Cayo and the water bugs and the found family.
I liked the twists and turns and I’m excited to see what happens in the next book.
I did think there was going to be more cooperation between Yamaa and Cayo judging from the blurb, but I’m hopeful for book 2!

DNF at page 190.
I wanted to love this book so bad! It had SO much promise but it was such hard work.
The magic system was never explained, the complexities with the different people were never explained, and the sheer amount of character and subplots? So hard to follow.
Normally a book this length would take me 4 or 5 days, but I’m at day 4 now and only a third of the way through. Like I said, I wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t keep wading through it. Maybe I’ll pick it up again, or try the audio, but I just can’t do it, sorry!
Edited to add: I did the audio and managed to get through it!
This was an okay book. I do think it’s overly complicated and that the mistake was made by making Ren the main character. It would’ve been better if the city were the focus or the rivalries house Trimentis has, so that things make sense at the end.
I also thought the Rook should’ve been a bigger character, even if it was easy to work out who they were.
I did like the twist at the end, and am interested in seeing what happens in the second book.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book, I really liked it!
I loved the cast and the twists and turns, as well as how the plot kept moving along. I do feel like some things were a bit predictable, but it wasn’t in a clichéd way.
I like Remy and Hale, and the spice level was good.
I do feel as if Remy’s magic is a bit inconsistent, but I hope that will rectify in the following books.
Give it a go!

I absolutely loved this book! I don’t know why I waited so long to read it!
I loved Alosa. She’s a great character, so strong and confident.
I loved Riden, so well-rounded and multi-layered.
I also really loved Enwen.
I loved the action, and the twists and turns and how there were no lulls in the story.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!

This was a peculiar little book. I’m not entirely sure of the point of it, but I enjoyed it anyway!
The writing was beautiful as always and the characters so lifelike they jumped off the page.
I loved the warm and fuzzy bits, as well as the family and the house.
A thoroughly enjoyable book!
