May the kind of relationships in this book never find me, and if they do, shoot me.

I enjoyed this, but I can see why so many people disliked it. It’s essentially a bunch of depressed early-to-mid-30s people whining about their lives and how much they love each other. But it’s more than that! It’s a classic Sally Rooney exploration of human relationships and how our mental state affects ourselves and the people around us, those we love! I do not think this book is for everyone, but I certainly think it is for me.

P.S. The “Which Sally Rooney character are you” quiz I just took said I was Eileen, which I feel to be accurate.

5/24/24:

I give this book a lot of my thoughts. I find myself loving how I felt when I read this book, and loving at least 3/4 characters, yet agreeing with a lot of what negative reviews say. This book is preachy, its characters obnoxious, etc. I will forever have this book at five stars, and it holds a special little spot in my heart. I'm also thinking again about this book because I am rereading Normal People, and plan on reading Conversations with Friends soon.

This story is beyond description, it was so beautifully tragic. Quick, painful, and possibly one of the most stunning stories I have ever read.

What the actual fuck??? MAGGIE IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY. YOU SAID IT DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT DO WHY DID THAT HAPPEN. MAGGIE-MAGGIE PLEASE
This trilogy is bullshit and would be 10x better if it was just Declan and Jordan making out and talking abt art but I still love it and I cried multiple times reading this book

There is so much to be said about this book. I'll admit, at the beginning, I was quite underwhelmed. I think this book suffered from a tad bit too much exposition, but also somehow benefited? Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass. I think Suzanne Collins is a genius, and not just for the success of these dark, gruesome books. She's a masterful writer who seamlessly weaves metaphors and foreshadowing into her novels in a just-subtle-enough way that you don't notice initially, while still being clear. I was not expecting this to have as much of a kick as it did, but I can say with certainty that this book is a must-read if you plan on reading the original trilogy.
