I really enjoyed this volume! It's possibly my favorite out of the Masterpiece Collection because I enjoyed the story and how everything kept going wrong, and the idea behind Intersection Fortune Telling, the Intersection Pretty Boy, and all the spirits trapped in the foggy streets. The atmosphere of the streets, fog, and people were really good, so it helped tie the whole story together.

I think Ito really nailed the atmosphere of Frankenstein, but lost a bit of the drive the story had. The stakes weren't as high in this retelling, but the art did well at maintaining the horror of the story.

This story was more funny than scary. Most of these stars are for the body horror and claustrophobia.

The Bully 5/5, for psychological thriller potential and implied awful ending
A Deserter in the House 5/5, good psychological horror, atmosphere, dramatic irony
Heart of a Father 4/5, this one was kind of a mindfucker, but the art wasn't as stunning as the others
Memories 5/5, I didn't really see this plot twist coming, so I was very into it
Back Alley 5/5, I also did not see this ending coming and thank god honestly
Love as Scripted 5/5, loved that ending actually
Inside the Earth... 4/5, predictable but still spooky and it looked stunning

Slug Girl 5/5, this one I feel like is more iconic than anything. Creepy and weird, it's an utter classic in the Ito cannon.
The Thing That Drifted Ashore 3/5, I didn't find this one as creepy as I thought I would. There was very little tension in it.
Mold 4/5, disgusting and disturbing, I think of this story fairly often. A lot left unresolved here.
The Chill (Shivers) 5/5, as someone with a fear of holes, this one absolutely HAUNTS me
Ryokan (The Inn) 3/5, not as scary as it first seemed, a bit predictable and not all together shocking
The Groaning Drain 5/5, the first time I read this I had trouble sleeping SO
Bio-House 2/5, the art in this story isn't really good, and the story was forgettable and not altogether shocking or scary. Probably one of my least favorite Ito shorts.

The Face Burglar 4/5, while I really like this concept and thought it took a dark turn, the art isn't nearly as nice as some of the other one shots in this volume.
Scarecrow 4/5, creepy for sure, I love the idea of the dead coming back for some kind of vengeance
Falling 4/5, really weird and really spooky
Red String 2/5, this one was honestly kind of boring for me
My Dear Ancestors 4/5, this one gets more stars for being psychological and fucked up more than actually scary or shocking
The Hanging Balloons 5/5, this is one of my favorite Ito shorts and is just so bizarre and scary honestly

The Long Hair in the Attic 5/5, this one is just so MUCH and is so disturbing and creepy BAH
Approval 5/5, I think this one genuinely shocked me the first time I read it
Beehive 5/5, weird as well and gross as hell and I HATE bees and wasps ya'll
Dying Young 5/5, this one really went from weird to terrifying and honestly I was anxious the whole time
Headless Sculptures 5/5, the image of those sculptures fighting over a head and that girl not getting away-AWFUL
Flesh-Colored Horror 5/5, this one was so WEIRD but so AWFUL and creepy like!! Excuse me!!

I wasn't too impressed with this story actually, and thought the plot was uninteresting and had no real draw to the characters either. Three stars for concept and art, as usual.

This is probably one of my favorite story collections from Ito. I think most of these are retellings of urban myths, which leaves them with a bit more finality than some his other shorts.
1. The Woman Next Door 5/5, this was simultaneously scary as shit and hilarious, and I like that the woman didn't actually seem to be evil, just having fun terrorizing her neighbors when they got to be too nosy.
2. Sound of Grass 5/5, I will not forget the image of the grass falling anytime soon and honestly I wish I could.
3. Graveman 5/5, this somehow manages to be something I have feared my entire life and never realized I did.
4. The Seashore 5/5, great art, creepy girls, creepy ocean, creepy photos, and a mystery left at the end.
5. Just the Two of Us 5/5, very predictable but stylistically wonderful with food racing and characters.
6. The Scarlet Circle 5/5, I don't know why but I found this story to be so interesting and spooky. I've been thinking about it for days and I can't quite put my finger on it but it definitely sits with me.

Obviously fucked, but the story is very compelling and addicting. It leaves a lot to think about, but also draws you in.
