I feel like this is the book of all books! This book is intersectional without stating the word! I am extremely in awe of Toni Morrison. I will forever be grateful and wish that I was able to meet my ancestor. I wish I was able to receive the gifts that she received from James Baldwin into myself. The most beautiful part of this book is her command of language and intent. In addition to her love for mankind, and her unbridled honesty. I drank from every chapter and was left hungry for more. There will never be another Toni Morrison, this is for sure.
I love it when a writer infused their experiences into their writing. The main theme of this book (in my opinion) is the feeling of being unsettled and not knowing where your home is. The book repeatedly explored the notion of having two homes and belonging as immigrant.
Manuela is a young girl with beautiful eyes. Some say they looked like the sun and stars in one. She grows up protected by her mother and given little information about her mother. This information became sort of an obsession to her. She wanted to know him! She wanted him to want her.
One day ICE comes for her mother and she had to make a difficult decision. A decision that was foreign to her. Up to that point she never made decisions for herself. Although she was exited about this decision, that decision lead to a series of tough decisions. There is plot of love interest in this book. I found myself most interested by the school of magical beings. There were certain rules for the school and the magical beings. If rules were broken, they had to meet with the citadel.
This story was heartbreaking at times and heartwarming at others. I can’t wait to see what’s next with this series.
It is clear that this author loves the Harry Potter series. I saw Harry Potter famous martyr complex and constantly separating himself from his SUPPORTIVE friends (eye roll). Manuela and Harry has that in common. You can see how some of characters in this book were influenced by the characters in Harry Potter. Manuela and Harry thought they can tackle the world without their friends but

This was a nice book about a member of the secret service and the troubles that follows him. It followed him all the way to Japan, where he meets a beautiful woman, learns how to meditate, and have to save his sister. The action in this book was great but there were moments *&&* measuring contests with the MC and other male characters. This was definitely a book that I need to read right now compared to the other tough subject books that I have been reading.
This romance novel was very cute and a light pace to the other books that I have read this year. I found grandma Peggy to be the most intriguing character in the story. I had many thoughts of what her secrets were... and I was wrong. I felt myself in a constant struggle to like the MC, Evie. At times she was lovable and at other times, I wanted to be like "sis really, why are you so mean?" However, her character development was good. Once you learn more about her, you realize how much adversity she has faced and why her attitude was the way it was.
I recently read The Vanishing Half and have fallen completely in love with Brit Bennett and loved this book as well. Review on my YouTube channel will be coming soon.
As the late Chadwick stated, "to be young, talented, and gifted." I kept thinking of that line while reading this masterpiece. This book speaks to a certain type of blackness that is not often spoken about. This book touches of recognizes other people's blackness, standing firming in your own, dangers of not listening to yourself, black women in tech, and diaspora as a whole. Claire is a character that I related too and I wish that Slay was real so I could join. However, I believe that slay already exists but not in digital form. It's a collective community initiative. The cards in this book were pure gold. I wish I could reclaim my time as well.
I love the witches and spell casting in this book. It is not often that I am given the opportunity to read about characters who are non-binary, bi, femme, and queer who are witches. This story follows a group of young witches who are known as the grays. One of their members goes missing and in order to retrieve her, they need to cast a spell to invite another witch into their coven. Through trial and error they try to welcome her into her coven and others in this town tried to persuade the newcomer to not hang out with the grays. I am a sucker for a good group name so I was here for the grays. I had a lot of visual moments while reading. Although the woods were dangerous. the trees were beautiful in my imagination.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I actually like the second book more than the first. This is the first book that I've read where a black author discusses the intersectional relationship between black slaves and indigenous people. I of course enjoyed the parts of the book that were in Louisiana. I was most intrigued by the land acknowledgments, intermingling, and the fight for descendants of the cattle tribe and slave to protect one another. They often protected each other with their lives. This book addresses racism, indigenous laws, and rights, white supremacy, consequences of treaties in the U.S.A with indigenous folks, and have quite a few of triggering language (i.e., n-word).
This is a story about Darren who is a man of the law who comes across this case in Texas that is tied to another case that he is working on. A little white boy goes missing and the people in this rural town in Texas want to frame it on a 90-year black man. Darren is trying to follow every lead to figure out how the death of a person is tied to the kidnapping of another; in addition to figuring out how to protect the indigenous folks of the area. Darren constantly dealt with his morals being tested throughout the book. Often times his naivety or good nature prevented him from seeing people as who they truly were. While reading this book, there were two characters that I was most upset with, Brianna and Darren's mother. Read this book to find out why! Attica did it again. I can't wait for book 3.
