This crime fiction was a true depiction of Black Crime fiction and is a product of its time. There is homophobic slurs used for the time frame of book, misogyny, and sexism! Overall this was a quick book about loss, grieve, and greed. What happens when you never get what you think you deserve?

The Lion of the piano is a well fitting name for Teresa. To be just 6 years old and have the ability to be so musical talent that although experiencing hardship, she still found the beauty in the world. This was also a story of what can happen when parents are give the resources and maturity to allow their children to grow and be who they are!

This was a good history lessons on girls and who is and is not allowed to play drums from a cultural perspective! It was beautiful to know this was based on a true story.

Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I think the second book in the series murder was more humorous than anything else. The man who was dead like calling the love interest names and some of the names I laughed at and some I was "why, say that." There was also some notions about queer folks in this book that I didn't now necessary like. I also like that when things I did not like was said, it was said and the topic changed. Sometimes when I read authors who include othering in the text, I think they go in depth in the othering and it stops me from reading.

I think that the part of one of ghost striving to still be with their family even after death was one of the most beautiful parts of the book.

The southern sayings in this had me laughing. Although the lack of diversity and other word choices I did not necessary like. I did like the coziness of this mystery and plan to continue the series.

This book has a cast of what I assume is White Americans who are living in a small town and some of the people in the town are witches. However, a woman who is the sole provider of her younger sister recently lost her aunt. The woman must figure out what is happening to person who died, even thought he was a corrupt law enforcement officer and most of the towns people didn't like her. The southern sayings in this had me laughing. Although the lack of diversity and other word choices I did not necessary like. I did like the coziness of this mystery and plan to continue the series.
