The writing and character development were bleh, but this was about a historical figure that I knew nothing about, so it was interesting to learn more about Consuelo. A lot of googling happened while reading this book.
P good. Didn’t captivate me in quite the same way as Uprooted, but it was still entertaining.
I DID IT. 32 hours and I’ve finally finished this story. I really enjoyed the world building, the insane details, and the inclusion of extensive footnotes- which is the main reason I’m giving a four star rating. All of the men in this story were completely insufferable except for Childermass. Norrell is still literally the worst.
4.75 stars. The story itself is 3.5 stars, but the artwork is incredible and pushes up my rating. Wowow. Every page is a masterpiece, and I enjoyed slowly reading through this book and absorbing each piece of art. I particularly loved the ink renditions of older artworks and the art appreciation woven in.
I wanted to love this, but I ended up liking it. This is a really fascinating period in colonial history, and I learned a lot. This book is very dense, and I felt confused during some parts because Schiff’s explanations and narratives seemed convoluted at times. Overall, it was interesting but wish it was organized a bit better, narrative wise.
This one was meh. Something was missing from this book and I didn’t enjoy it as thoroughly as Martin’s previous two books in the series. And the main conflict/drama seemed super rushed at the end, like it was tacked on and not fully resolved. Still enjoyed the writing and the banter, it was fun but not in the same way as Intercepted or Fumbled.
