3.5 stars. What the hell? My main gripe was with the prose style. It was too...flowery? Formal? Not sure, but it effected my enjoyment of the story.
Hmm I wanted to like this book much more than I did. I loved two of the stories, liked most of the other ones, and thought of few of them were meh. LOVED The Little Mermaid and Velveteen Rabbit retellings. I just think my expectations were set too high based on all the hype I had been hearing about it.
Omggg this book! Thoroughly entertaining, and such a wonderful twisty-turny historical fiction that would have never actually been written during its time but I’m so glad it exists. A lot of reviews say the last 250 pages are surprising, but honestly the twist at the end of part one is what got me! :0
I really enjoyed reading this story, but something was...idunno, lacking? I can’t place my finger on exactly what was missing from this book for me, but it felt abrupt at times, or like I felt like I had skipped a page at certain points or something. Anyways, this is an engrossing story. Aster is an excellent main character, and you easily see the structure of the Matilda as a reflection of our society.
4.5 stars. What a journey. Such a great story of the horror genre! It’s over 400 pages, but I flew through it. Great last read of 2019.
3.5 stars. I think this is a great book (and v important book) for young people to read. Mostly read this because I loved Shout as a preteen.
