the embodiment of how romance books these days are just a collection of tropes as opposed to actual love stories.
chemistry between the characters?? non-existent. what you will find tho, is the same basic, generic, arranged marriage romance novel that ana huang (and a million other authors) have already written to death.

damn, i'm slightly disappointed by this one :/ none of the characters interested me, which is a shame because the synopsis promises the type of main character that i usually ADORE reading about (bitchy main characters lmao), but it didn't really deliver on that front?? rather than a political fantasy following an older, powerful "bitch queen", we get a story where our badass spoilt main character spends the entire book chasing after her shitty husband who abandoned her and their son?? yeah, i definitely think this one was marketed incorrectly
i will be continuing with the series, in the hope that the mc will actually develop a fucking spine

a gothic classic about a woman who escapes slavery, and finds herself haunted by the ghost of her dead baby.
i've been wanting to read this novel for a while, i'm so glad i got to it this year. a brutal story that successfully manages to capture the multifaceted horrors of slavery. 'beloved' is about motherhood, collective tragedy, personal and shared loss, alienation of bodies (especially female bodies after abuse), the deprivation of homes, and a history that must be remembered & redeemed. absolutely suggest picking this up, hate that it's taken me so long to get to it.

3.5 ☆ - FINALLY this book is finished omfg
i think this book would be perfect for stephen king fans (wendig doesn't shy away from making it clear that king was one of his main inspirations for this novel). personally, stephen king's writing doesn't really work for me. although i think wendig's writing is more up my alley, i still ended up losing interest because this book is just SO DAMN LONG
could've been great if it was 250 pages shorter lmao

I absolutely loved this book. The writing style was perfect, the plot was engaging and the characters each had their own personality. I couldn't put this book down, it was that good. One thing that annoyed me was the ending. I thought the ending was very abrupt, and not what I expected at all. I hope there's a second book because I have a lot of questions.
“What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?”
