I couldn't have read this poetry collection at a better time. With the Black Lives Matter movement, we see the world fight back against injustice. This poetry collection is doing the same, it argues against all forms of inequality. The poems are raw, and full of pain and anger. They're an embodiment of hope, change, desperation, feminism, strength and

I loved this! This is a graphic novel that followa Mia, a young girl living in the slums in an abusive household. She has no friends, no siblings and no one to depend on. She hates her life. One day, she finds time is frozen. Everyone has frozen, and she's the only one who's awake. During her time in this dimension, she endeavors on a journey of self discovery and self-love. I feel like this graphic novel covers a multitude of important topics. My favourite being the concept that life is tough for everyone. And you can either run from life's challenges, or embrace them. And in doing so, embrace yourself and who you are. The author has created an insightful piece of work, with great art and an amazing storyline. It was a great experience, and if you want to read it (which I recommend you do

This was powerful, insightful and very relatable.
This book touched on so many topics, race being one of the main ones, and I found it to be so empowering. I think this would speak more to women of colour. Mainly because it focalises a lot on themes like appreciating your culture, loving your skin and your ethnic features, as well as more difficult topics like white guilt. There were certain poems that spoke a lot about Africa and what it means to be an African in a westernised society. As someone who isn't African, I found those poems specifically to be so insightful.
My favourite poem, or the one that spoke to me to the most, was:
Like how STUNNING is that?
Poetry is something that is so personal. It's more than just words, it's thoughts and feelings and ideas that have struck the poet so profoundly that they had to make art out of it. I really appreciate what Nayyirah Waheed has done with this poetry book. I think this would be so empowering to many young women of colour all over the world.
The reason I didn't rate this higher was because there were quite a few poems that seemed unoriginal, if that's the right word? There were certain peoms that were like little statements that I'd already heard a million times before.

i will crawl for white beauty.
eat my arms.
barter my legs (make my thighs into altars of grief).
for
skin that does not drink night.
hair that is not angry.
body that is not soil.
i place curses on my flesh
call them diets.
tell my ancestors
they are ugly.
howl at my nose until it bleeds.
run my heart across my teeth, repeatedly.
i am dying.
to be
beautiful.
Like how STUNNING is that?

I was so nervous for this book. I really like Lily as a character, I think she's amazing. But I was very apprehensive about reading a book where the main female character is a young teenager who pines over a much older male. I'm a huge fan of age gap romances, but not when it includes 15 year old girls, like wtf?
I'm SO GLAD, that the romance between the characters didn't actually start until Lily was an adult. If Romero started liking Lily when she was 15... this book would've been a huge NO. Thankfully, that wasn't the case.
I really liked Romero and Lily's relationship. In fact, they're my favourite couple in the series so far. Romero is adorable, and Lily is so relatable. I loved them together. My only issue is that there isn't a lot action? Towards the end, it started getting tense but stopped before anything mafia-related actually happens. When I pick up a mafia romance, I want there to actually be mafia related things happening. idk, I just wish there was more action.
But overall, I did really enjoy it. The two main characters are definitely the highlight of this novel.

So this was my first book in the 2019 Reading Rush, I read ACOTAR for the 'non-human main character' challenge. And I loved it so much! Ig was just as good as I remembered, and I'm overjoyed to be reunited with Feyre and Rhysand and just Prythian as a whole.
So for those of you who haven't read this series, ACOTAR follows Feyre, a human, as she transgresses and kills a faerie. As a result of her actions, Feyre is dragged to Prythian, the land of the faeries where she faces multitudes of challenges.
Onto my feelings. I was not expecting this book to hurt like a bitch again. I found myself falling in love with almost all of the characters. Queen Mas has a special ability to allow her readers to share every emotion Feyre is feeling. This book destroyed my heart, and then stitched it back together again, multiple times. I absolutely adore Feyre and the world, and I definitely recommend!

This had a rocky start for me. I wasn't a huge fan of Damon at the start, he was irritating me a little bit because of the sexism lol. But as the story progressed, and we learnt more about Damon's childhood etc. he definitely grew on me. I think that the chapters set in the past did get slightly tedious after a while, the story did drag slightly because of them. But those chapters did *wonders* for Damon's character. Like his character development was insane.
He's definitely my favourite out of all of the boys in this series, mainly because he isn't an asshole for the sake of it. He isn't mean because he's rich and entitled and privileged. It's because he's been through so much TRAUMA and I definitely sympathise with him in a way that I didn't with Kai and Michael. He's the most complex out of all the characters, and he intrigued me SO MUCH.
I also adored Winter, I thought she was amazing. I'm not sure if I like her as much as Banks?? But she's definitely up there with my faves. I really liked the rep of a blind character. I did question at times if Penelope Douglas had only made Winter blind to build angst and tension, because when we're in her perspective, we can't *see* the threat, rather than for the actual representation. But idk. Winter is MILESSSS better than Rika (thank god for that), and I loved her.
SPOILERS IN THIS SECTION BECAUSE OMFG:
What the hell was that threesome scene??? AGAIN???? I'm so confused. It did absolutely nothing for the story, and it was so out of character? Damon, throughout the book, has been so fucking protective of Winter, making sure that she doesn't sleep with anyone that's not him. And of nowhere, he's suddenly having a threesome? LOL WHAT?! It's so random, and it didn't even work. Like one of the things that defines Damon is that he doesn't like sharing. That's why in Hideaway, we find out he kept Banks hidden her entire life - because he wanted to keep Banks for HIMSELF. It's also the reason why he didn't like Rika in Corrupt, because he Michael is his friend, and he doesn't want to share. So why tf is he randomly having a threesome? I'm lowkey annoyed lmao.
And, I really dk how to feel about Rika becoming MAYOR?
*cringes internally*
I'm sorry, but Rika is not mayor material sdkskdlsk. I really dislike her character, she's a liiiitle stupid. I mean, if anyone was going to become the mayor (lmao) it should've been Banks. She is the one who is selfless and caring. Rika is just...... not it. sorry to all the Rika stans.
And lastly, my girl Banks is PREGNANT!!! FUCK YESSS. I was honestly so happy when I read that she was pregnant. She's going to be such an amazing mum, and ahh I love this for her and Kai
