I kinda don't know how to rate this because I read the book so slowly I semi-convinced myself this was all happening in real life and the characters in the book were my friend who i would catch up with every few nights.... anyway marx best boy

This fucks, though i'm not sure I could enjoy it as much without having seen the movie first, weirdly. Everyone saying Tolkien is overrated just won't consider him in his proper context because like dude was writing a book AND inventing the fantasy genre!! Stop hating on him for sticking too close to genre conventions mf HE WAS MAKING THE GENRE CONVENTIONS!! That's it.

I like when the besties are talking more than anything actiony etc because theres an earnestness to these characters that just makes me really happy like omg yay my pals! like i cheered every time someone i knew showed up like yay Gimli!! yay Legolas!!!

10 year old in 1937: oh boy the hobbit is so cool, if only there were three more main-story books and lots and lots of lore to read of!
27 year old in 1954: just going to the bookstore to browse... HOLY SHIT IS THAT A SEQUEL TO THE HOBBIT??

idk how to explain why I'm getting more chick-lit > romance vibes from this even tho it centers around a relationship and has a HEA (or at least a HFN) but it was just giving chick-lit. Maybe bc it's focused on ALL her close relationships, not just the one guy? But just to clarify I'm not rating it down because of that, I actually super enjoyed that & the fact that this didn't set out to be a conventional romance novel. Very huge slay! It's just a 3.5 book that also happens to 100% fit the genre it's marketed as.

Dani slayed and carried the book. Jameson ok whatever I literally should have cared as an Aspiring Academic (tm) but all his actions reek of such alpha-male misogyny, just disguised in a tweed jacket.

My two biggest problems abt the book go hand in hand: I don’t think there was really anything they liked about their relationship other than the sex, and I don’t see how the HEA/HFN is meant to be that. Like, the drama I was reading the book for had just started…. And then boom book over? Boo how rude.  Also a MAJOR plot thread - pretty much THE reason Dani actually went to the UK - just… did not get resolved? So what, Jameson gets his family drama at least semi-resolved but Dani and her goals and dreams are just forgotten abt???

Anyway back to the sex: the scenes themselves were good don’t get me wrong but it was ALWAYS sex with these two. He’d like like “I don’t want you to get tied up in this” and she’d be like “I want to be tied up 😏” like they were so unserious

i could write a million sentences to explain why this sucked ass but one will do: we NEED to stop the ya-ification of adult fantasy and FAST. like ASAP!! bc this would have been 3 stars as a ya but nah saying this is adult is so condescending like dude how dumb do you think your reader is
