Antonio lives with his mom and her partner, Leslie. The kids make fun of Leslie for her clothes and walk, and he gets embarrassed. Should he make a card and display it publicly on Mother's Day? Books like these illustrate how hard it can be to celebrate Mother's Day.

Super cute book about a librarian. I actually had to struggle to figure out why this was on the Rainbow List.

This is a touching story of what happens after someone is adopted. Lester moves in with Daddy Albert and Daddy Rich after years of living in a children's home. He is convinced that someone bad is going to take him away at night, but unable to vocalize this need, much to the frustration of his dads. They try to be patient, but being woken up every night is hard. Eventually they figure out a solution that works for the whole family. This book has the added nuance of being Vera Williams' last book, which she worked with Chris Raschka specifically on.
informative

It's a very cute first words book.

This is an excellent collection of work relating to book banning in the United States. I love the way it has a story about a specific type of book banning that happens, and then it cuts to a list of books or organizations that work with that. It's very powerful.

A child proclaims they are a girl. Often they are mistaken for a boy, which annoys them but they push through it. This book proclaims the joy of being yourself, no matter who that is and what society says.

I liked this story about two boys named Bob who don't have a lot in common. They seem to do a lot of parallel play. When a new kid moves in named Blossom, she questions some of their playing and one boy sticks up for the other. It's a very sweet story.

A boy penguin suddenly turns pink and doesn't know what to do. Should he go live with flamingos? Stay with the other penguins who make fun of him? He'll find his place eventually.

I like that this book brings up part of the problem with parent-specific events: what if a kid doesn't have one? Like Stella has two dads, and no mom. Another kid has two moms, so what will he do on Father's Day? It's a good book to help kids think about what makes a family.

A sweet story about a grandmother who misses India and her granddaughter who helps her find some joy.
