Family: Daughter, Dad, Mom

A phenomenal use of pull-apart pages that reveal two-step instructions for popular baby sign language. While learning and practicing her sign language, her mom and dad encourage please and thank you manners. Bonus points for including nursing (although the illustration shows Nita after she nurses) and an equal inclusion of daddy time.

Age: All ages
Companion Book: Bookstore Babies (just as great!)

Finally, a book that shows a MODERN library and people! "At the library, not every book is on paper...but every book opens a new adventure." A true delight.

My only beef is that parents with older children may not pick this up since the title says "babies" but the illustrations and content depict all preschool ages and experiences at the library. And the book NEEDS to be made into a picture book format so we can share it at storytimes!

Age: Infant-Toddler
Body: Hair

White backgrounds and bright photographs make this board book instantly appealing to little eyes. A mirror at the end helps to celebrate the beautiful hair of the child that's listening to the story.

Age: Preschool-1st grade
Season: At the beach

A book accenting various play-on-words with one tantalizing question that gives the book a sense of purpose: Have you seen her trumpet? The illustrations are delightful paired with the observational questions throughout. For example, 'Who is blowing a dandelion?' shows a lion blowing a dandelion. Not only are the illustrations fun to examine but the final resolution to our hunting character is kinda adorbs. All kids will have fun with this mini word game.

Age: 5th grade-Middle School

Through photographs, short chapters, and a captivating narrative tone, younger readers are presented with this pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history that spurred Pride Parades around the world. Pitman tells the story through artifacts, paralleling a museum exhibit in book format. I was thankful that in the end, Pitman made it clear that pivotal moments like this may be destructive in nature but can change the course of history as they inspire and push forward change.

First line: "The blaze of sun wrung pops of sweat from the old mans brow, yet he cupped his hands around the glass of hot sweet tea as if to warm them."

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Identity: Afro latino
LGBTQ: Gender nonconforming main character, lesbian wedding

What another amazing contribution to the world of children's literature and a superb second installment in Julián's life. Julián and his cousin are a part of their aunties' wedding, laying flowers on the path and walking their dog down the aisle. Afterwards, the kids let their imaginations soar as they play together into the wee hours of the night.

My 4-year-old's eyes sparkled as she watched the two playful children sprout fairy wings and play together throughout the night's festivities.

It's hard to believe that Love could have topped her story and artwork but this is such an amazing book. A must buy for the holidays!

Age: K-3rd grade
Series: I Am Yoga, I Am Peace, I Am Human, I Am Love

Verde explores the difference that one action can make in our world, further unraveling the effect of one action as it cascades into another. The artwork and the story fluidly move together to present this big idea to little minds in a truly astounding and accessible way. There is a plot with characters, giving something for children to grasp onto, but the characters are never named. In fact, the text is in the first-person which is direct and empowering to the listeners. And who doesn't like to watch children dismantle a wall, find a friend, and, together, build something far greater?

This now tops my list of call-to-action stories FOR children (and not just the adults reading it).

Age: Kindergarten-3rd grade
