A girl invites the listeners to hunt for an alligator, but not before laying down some ground rules:
The suspense of this book will be an absolute delight to read aloud, not to mention the perfect amount of repetition, the search-and-find element, and the cadence.

NOT a hand in the swamp.
NOT a foot o'er the side.
DO NOT jump on any log.
DO NOT go for any ride.

Each spread features a different description or way to express love, featuring a Sesame Street character. Perfect for adults that love to read in different voices--especially those that have perfected those from Sesame Street.

Family: Daughter and mother
Location: Bihar or Jharkhand states of India
Sports: Soccer
A monsoon will not dampen Mina's persistent desire to play soccer, as she tries different ways to thwart the heavy rainfall. When the rainfall slows, Mina and her mother share a sweet moment together as they play soccer in the mud.
Soccer books are always welcome but this goes above and beyond with an excellent story, a child sharing the same passion as their parent, and it being a mother/daughter duo, nonetheless.

All about me: Sadness
Eland illustrates the feeling of sadness as a translucent, non-threatening, blob-like visitor, giving shape to an intrusive, overwhelming emotion. The first step you must take with Sadness is to "try not to be afraid of Sadness. Give it a name." An unnamed child goes on to interact with Sadness, finding quiet activities that they might both enjoy. 1-2 sentences per spread make this an excellent book for conversation and reading aloud.

LGBTQ: Gender non-conforming
Felix loves the feel of skirts and all the activities he can do in them. He can run faster, climb higher, and feels more confident in them. But mean words and giggling accompany his first days at school until Felix's reluctant father decides to stand up for his son and wears a skirt to drop him off.
It was...okay. Obviously, an important story to tell, but the target audience was geared more towards non-queer children. The tone of the story was extremely realistic and quite down-putting, although Felix does triumph on the last page. But the extreme amount of bullying--although realistic--may be overwhelming?

Animals: Porcupine, snake
Several animals refuse to give prickly Porcupine a hug until he finds a friend who is experiencing the same aversion. White backgrounds, simple text, and plenty of character voices make this perfect to read aloud.

Animals: Bears
Henry Bear's silly parents are always pushing him to do more fun things like eating cake for every meal and skipping school. When Henry Bear makes a new friend at school, he reveals the reason why and comes up with a solution.
Kids (and parents) will love the role reversal and Henry Bear's determination to make things right again.

Sports: Variety
Exercise activities and movement are paired with rhyming text in this ABC book filled with diverse skin color (and a couple children in wheelchairs). Bright, bold colors and Pixar-esque illustrations will make this incredibly appealing for a class read-aloud. Free Spirit Publishing wins again!
Supplemental material includes physical benefits of moving, social emotional benefits of movement, and 10 movements activities.

Concept Skill: Colors
With three words per spread, Genhart describes the meaning behind each color of the Pride flag. There is no supplementary material that can further explain the colors which is a bummer but may encourage a reader's own interpretation through the assistance of the illustrations. Genhart also sticks to the the traditional Pride flag, instead of the updated Philadelphia version that incorporates black and brown strips (that represent people of color in the queer community).
This is a perfect read-aloud for an all-ages storytime.
