Age: Infant

A mother, father, and their new infant spend quality time together on their stay-at-home babymoon. Martinez-Neal's soft, glowing illustrations compliment the tenderness and uncertainty of this brand new adventure for a beginning family. A delightful baby shower gift or a first-visit gift for a family.

(Note: the mother is shown nursing the child, so be cautious about gifting to a mother that is not breastfeeding her baby).

Age: Preschool
Concept Skill: Shapes
STEM: Math, Engineering (building with blocks)

Everything was going great until they started calling the square block a rectangle that's square. A delightful concept that was mired by poor wording. If the reader rephrases this, the book excels at introducing a more advanced introduction to three shapes: rectangle, square, and triangle.

Age: 1st-3rd grade
STEM: Math

Nip that arithmophobia in the bud with this nerve-soothing primer on our math-filled world. Spoiler alert: it's everywhere--even in your cookies!

I love that Barton has created a series of books that seek to "decriminalize" things that our culture may collectively dislike, include spiders, bees, and, now, math.

Age: Preschool-1st grade

Simple text and a white background accompany a message of one quiet, still moment.

Age: 5th grade-high school

Valuable, real-life subjects are presented but the writing felt incredibly forced. The dialogue felt like it was guiding the plot along--not building the relationships the girls shared with each other or with their world.

That being said...I'll probably still recommend it to fans of Raina Telgemeier and Sunny Side Up.

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Body: Hands

One girl's lifted hands experience a variety of situations throughout the day, from getting dressed, to classroom questions, to mom helping her up after a fall. McDaniel goes beyond the average body book and ends the book on an inspirational note to unite with others and advocate for yourself. A spread of people at march hold signs like "Water=Life," "Ningun ser humano es illegal" "Black Lives Matter" and the protagonist holds the sign "Lift Every Voice."

Age: Toddler-1st grade
Animals: Cows, wolf

My daughter loved the quiet lull of the lullaby followed by the frantic "EEEK!" of the cowboy. Big, big fan.

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Nature: Playing at the park

Solid matte backgrounds give pop to Sophie and her new friend Goose. Not much of a story but my 2-year-old daughter liked the playground setting and my over-use of the honking sound effect.

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Song: Do Your Ears Hang Low/Turkey in the Straw

An essential all-ages storytime book. An invitation for the audience to move, a tune, goofiness--it's all there!
