Age: Toddler-Kindergarten

A step-by-step guide to washing your woolly mammoth, if the need ever arises. The integration of scientific concepts (diagrams, steps) is seamless and the topic is fun.

Age: Infant-Toddler

Finally, someone wrote a book about storytimes! McQuinn highlights the best moments about the younger storytimes, including songs, scarves, and action rhymes. The parents are engaged and helping the children through the rhymes, including the rocket ship rhyme (Zoom, Zoom, Zoom).

Age: 1-Preschool
Animals: River/forest
Weather: Rain

Crocodile fairies his friends across the big river in the rain, offering his assistance without anything in return. Eventually his kindness is repaid by those he helped. Large bold illustrations, accompanied with a few wordless spreads and minimal text make this a great read-aloud for toddler and preschool storytime.

Age: Toddler-Preschool

A sweet lull that glides across the sea visiting a variety of noise-making animals.

Age: Toddler-Preschool

Matilda shares all these experiences with her cat and the narrator tries to state that the cat likes to do these things, but each illustration shows quite the opposite. So why does this cat keep sticking around? What does Matilda's cat like?

Age: Toddler-Preschool

Anholt really hits her audience on the nose with a pleasant and readable rhyme scheme, bright illustrations, and a simplified discussion about divorce for a young age. However, due to the simplicity, Anholt presents the adult birds' separation as a result of being in a cramped nest, and "it might be best if we build Daddy another nest." Little ones might wonder why everyone can't just live in a bigger house together. Also, the ending was a little weird when the baby bird learns to fly--only then can he visit his dad.

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Animals: Hedgehog and Anteater
Familiar Experience: Moving

A great addition to the stories about moving away, especially when you leave a best friend behind. Minimal text on each page make this perfect for the younger crowd but still suitable for the older ones.

Age: Infant-Preschool

A book admiring those ten tiny toes in all their cuteness. Another story a bit more therapeutic to the caregivers than the child.

Age: Infant-Preschool
Ocean Life: Whales

A lovely reminder to pause and breathe as we explore life's many pleasures. With minimal text, this would be a great book for storytime--therapeutic for both the child and the caregiver. This would also pair with a yoga or movement class/program.

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Math: Counting, Addition, Subtraction

Classic Barton illustrations (simple, bubbly, bold) follow a bus driver as he picks up cats and dogs. Although the addition and subtraction may be lost on the young crowd that Barton appeals to, at least it provides early exposure. With comprehension of addition and subtraction, the story will still be a winner with counting.
