The ultra cool Pete the Cat is rocking all over school with his new school shoes. A fun, participatory song (downloadable at harpercollinschinldrens.com/petethecat) and story meant to get the wiggles out of kids.

Age: Infant - Preschool

"The industrious pigs of Day by Day build a home, plant a garden, help their neighbors, and then gather in a harvest grown with hard work and kindness" (Goodreads feature review).

A soft telling

Age: Preschool - 1st grade

Looks like animals can play telephone, too. As the animal chatter travels, it becomes one conglomeration of animal gibber-jabber that is certainly hard to remember, as dog finds out. But don't worry, dog. Just start another!

Bold illustrations with comic speech bubbles.

Age: Preschool - Kindergarten

A cute idea with lovely artwork, but it felt too cluttered at times, taking attention away from the things that Foxy was magically pulling out of his tail.

Age: Preschool - Kindergarten
Animal: Siberian Tiger

"A mother Siberian Tiger and her cub step silently into the forest, floating like mist in the moonlight. The mother nudges her cub beneath a fallen tree as she goes in search of food. Suddenly there's a roar louder than any tiger's. Fire!"

The greatest achievement of this book is its ability to stand out amidst other picture books for preschool through kindergarten. Where others rhyme to capture the audience, London uses beautiful vocabulary to describe the rolling wilderness. Where others use bright artwork, Spirin uses darker, calmer tones which convey a more realistic picture of the winter landscape. The story incorporates nonfiction terminology (including a note from the author about Siberian Tigers) for those kids (and parents) that want a shift from everything else.

Another soft tale from the creators of A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Great for talking about stories and where they come from. Absolutely gorgeous watercolor and pencil with accurate (not caricaturized) animals.

Age: Preschool - Kindergarten

This would make an excellent read-aloud with a little song on every other page. Also great for engaging the audience with suspense building over the mystery giver. I wish there was clues that the kids could try to guess (other than guessing which animal would give carrots).

Age: Preschool - Kindergarten

Very, very much in love with this artwork. This might be fun to storytell!

Age: Toddler-Preschool
Animal: Bear

A unique picture book that showcases the intimacy of reading and, although not forcefully, how to provide an engaging reading experience for your child.

Age: Preschool +
Animals: Wolves
Family: Siblings--although not identified as brothers

A free verse tale from France about two wolves, one big and one little. When Little Wolf walks up to Big Wolf's tree, Big Wolf is curious and hesitant but certainly not hostile. Little Wolf proceeds to follow Big Wolf around. Big Wolf is annoyed but begins to admire the courage of Little Wolf. One day Big Wolf leaves his tree for a walk and Little Wolf does not follow. Happy to be away from this new creature, Big Wolf continues happily on his walk. Upon his return, Little Wolf is no longer under the tree. For the first time in his life, Big Wolf is lonely and nervously waits for Little Wolf's return.

I appreciated how easy this book was to read-aloud. Perhaps I was in the mood to read-aloud, but it was very easy to add emotional intonation to the story. I wonder if the author translated it herself.

A well-written story about the importance of human contact and the influence of a newcomer on a person's (wolf's) life.
