So, I am not going to give this a rating - mostly because I just do not know how at this point.
On the one hand, this is probably the best book by Rainbow Rowell that I have read. I did find it engaging, and overall I enjoyed the storyline, pacing and plot point. I liked their relationship, the family dynamics (well, Parks) and the awkward slow-burn / teen angstiness of the two of them.
What I did not enjoy however, was the (both overt and systemic) racism. The girl hate. The slut shaming. And all the other problematic points within this book.

Probably a strong 4.5, not a 5, but it was sweet and beautiful and complex and nuanced, all at the same time. It made my hear happy!
I actually liked this book a lot more than 'Burial rites', dispite both having a similar feel. I connected with the characters and folk lore much more in this one.
3.5/4
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! I don't think I care about anyone yet though... hopefully the sequel will give me a little cinnamon roll to fall in love with

This was great to have playing in the background - Carters stories were entertaining. The writing style wasn't great, but is something that can be overlooked for a life well-lived.
Ok - so, 16 year old Lenny would have really liked this, I think. 30 year old Lenny feels like she 100% missed the boat. That being said, I will (and already have) continue the series (my library have the audiobooks - I don't think I would actually read the physical copies of these ones, I don't think I would get through them).
The story moves pretty fast, so it is enough to keep me interested, but the critical part of my brain does get caught up on the slight girl-hate, the repetitiveness of descriptions (everyone always has a sweaty back/neck. Always), and the Mary-Sue like qualities of the protag. Could have also done without the... romance... ya'll know what I mean. Little GOT-esque. ;)
But I will finish off the first 3 in the series, and decide from there if I want to invest in the rest.

I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to!
I really loved the description and the journey along the trail, when let this memoir down for me was the repetitive nature of the authors relationships with her family.
