This book is perfection... both physically and audio. The found family vibes... the humour... the high stakes that just keep getting higher. The demon... if you know, you know! The main character is an older person and works really well. I love that it's a pirate book but isn't completely set at sea and the world is so rich and detailed... so perfect! I can't wait to for the next instalment... especially after the ending. It was a cliff hanger but not the annoying kind... more the insinuation kind than the hanging you off the cliff kind.

I was so excited to get to this book. As someone who spent a good chunk of their life thinking they might be and the other half wishing to "not have feelings", this was a welcome read. I think I always understood that we (as society), don't really know what Sociopathy actually is or what it means for a persons behaviour. This book clarified and explained so many things that I previously only had a limited knowledge of. Not only this, but it was given from both the lived experience of, and the professional knowledge of. Never will I ever use the word sociopath to negatively label someone again. I understand that, like other personality disorders/types, and with the right support in place sociopathy is a perfectly manageable condition. However, because I have a personality disorder that is often negatively stereotyped (including at one point of this book... yes Patric Gagne threw me under the bus temporarily.... AITA?), I did come from a place of wanting to understand better... I worry that the built up fear will take more than this book to dispel. This is a pretty great start though... and I can see this book being one that helps a lot of people both with and without sociopathy to understand themselves and/or people around them better. I appreciated the raw honesty even with the things that could get the author in trouble and the things that people forget to try and understand the motivations of and maybe just see the resulting action. The writing was of a high standard too and it was a pleasure to read. I did also grab the audio version of this (which is read by the woman herself), and that was also well produced and read. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand better. I not only recommend this, but hope that this will be read by many.

Two of my favourite things in books are vampires and witches... check and check! However, don't expect the vampires to appear until late in the book. This was an intriguing but slow start but is a good solid read once it gets into the flow. There's several twists that are sometimes a little confusing to keep track of but overall this was a great time. There was a lot of "what is justice" and " what makes gender" that was really well done. I am looking forward to the next book to find out what happens next. The writing is good, but could do with a good audiobook to accompany and maybe even another round of editing to iron out the couple of little inconsistencies.

I was given the heads up about this title from a friend and I'm glad I was. I am rating this 3.5 stars as it was a shorter book with a predictable plot. However, it was a fun time and good festive thriller. I liked the family drama but would have chosen the villain to have been another one of the characters. Who the villain was predictable and the reason why they were the villain was different, but the reactions and realisation by the rest of the characters was not believable to me. The remote snow storm location is always a hit for me and I really enjoyed what makes the house unique too. The writing was pretty good too and I will be looking out for more from this author.

This is the first title by this author that I have read and I am officially putting Sulari Gentill on my list of authors I NEED to read their backlist for. This title started of ok but within the first 5 chapters something happened and I became obsessed. I ended up reading this in one sitting. Trust me when I say... I needed the loo sooooo bad when I came out of the hypnotic trance I was in for the duration of this book. The characters were really well flushed out and had backstory without info dumping, The backstory and the impact of past things is a key to the actions and feelings of the characters but then the twists are so unpredictable. Not to mention the moments where you think things have happened when they haven't and vice versa. The characters and plot are as interesting and entertaining as each other in this book and I recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries with some thriller aspects. Is new to the mystery genre and is used to faster paced plots. This is more of a medium pace, but because of the thriller aspects I think it would suit for this reader. I also think that people who like true crime and those who may be mystery readers but are wanting to come out of a reading slump.

This book was set up for success... the Scandinavian setting, the mostly empty sanatorium with a spooky background, a bunch of characters that were all morally grey in their own ways. Twists that you felt, but didn't see coming. The dual time line in this was really effective in this too. I liked that the chapters were clearly labeled with character names and year. Honestly, struggling to criticise this book at all... kind of annoying really. There were a couple of short "lulls" in the story that dropped the rating for me to a 4 star but would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a mystery that edges into thriller territory.

This is a beautifully written and translated book. I was so impressed with how the flow of the writing was kept even in translation. It was clearly well researched, as there were lots of real world connections made throughout. This really leaves you feeling intrigued to find out more about the real world to see what was used in the book and what was made up. An example of this was the invention of fingerprinting to find perpetrators of crime. I enjoyed the single point of view, stream of consciousness style... despite this not always working for me. There was enough change in "direction" to keep me interested. This single point of view also encouraged me to think about how the main character was appearing to others throughout. The title and the exploration of the concept of thirst in many forms was such an interesting part of the book too. Vampire stories often end with the vampire losing all humanity... this was not the case here, as with the recollection of the main characters mother and child and the very human way they looked back over their life and vampirism and still made decisions based on human emotion and thought processes. This was a well written, well translated, vampire book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys books that make you curious to know more and that love a good thought experiment. My rating is 4.5 stars.
