This is amateur writing. Run on sentences. Superfluous adjectives. Tells me nothing about the situation or characters.
This is the kind of writing I would use writing an essay to make my word count when I didn't have anything to say.

Not that it’s any great mystery as to why they left this grandfather behind, Talasyn mused, watching from a dim corner of the thatched longhouse as the stooped, elderly cleric in pale yellow robes struggled to lift a large pewter goblet over the crackling fire that was reflecting off his marble-ball scalp.
The reviews of the book are outstanding but I couldn't stomach the godawful prose. Did the writer use AI to make her language sound "sophisticated"?
I have put up with a lot of bad writing (plot holes, heavy exposition, cardboard characters, pacing issues) and I have managed to ignore all that for a good story but I could only get two or three chapters before I gave up on this.
If you want to be a writer you actually need to be a reader first.

This is a fast paced book with lots of spice. It is the equivalent of the pulp sci Fi of the 50s except it's written for women. There is adventure on an alien planet and there is a huge Deus ex machina in the middle of the book so that the story can wrap up quickly without a lot of mystery.
It's an enjoyable and fast rollicking read. Perfect for when you just want a sexy adventure story and don't want to think too hard about it

I think I will read the next book instead of listening to the audiobook. Jasmine Mas writes unhinged dark romance fantasy that is also incredibly funny ... In an extremely sarcastic and cynical way.
If a reader is triggered by non con or dub con sex scenes, if insane and violent MMC who stalk and terrorize the FMC then do not read Mas' books.
The Mas universe has no relevance to the real world so the reader needs to be able to separate fiction from real life. Alexis is just a girl trying to survive in a terrible world. Ok she is a bit weird and writes erotic fan fiction about Carl Guiess, a 19th century mathematician
Her FMC are always one step away from totally losing their shit and obsessed with whether death is a viable option. As in: being dead would at least be quieter or warmer or less stressful than this hell. Anyone who has had to work double overtime to make an impos ible deadline or work outdoors in -20 degree weather or be stuck in a social situation with the worst people in the world will understand the thought that death may be a viable option at this point.
And that's the humour of this book and her previous series "Cruel Shifterverse". The world is insane, psychotic and totally off balance but weirdly misshapen animals are adorable, love for your BFF tops any other relationship even if you are mostly trading barbs at each other and most of your time is spent exhausted, dirty, bloody and muddling through life by purposely obliterating yourself in a haze of alcohol, drugs or other mind altering substance
I guess what I'm saying here is that these 20 year olds are EXACTLY how I was at 20 yrs old. None of this YA super smart hero shit. More like being dragged into adulting one disaster at a time.
My only disappointment is having to wait until OCTOBER 2025 for the next installment!

Almost a DNF. The FMC is annoying and the competition makes no sense except to pander to YA readers who loved Hunger Games. The MMC says one phrase over and over again and it's not cute or funny. It's like his only feature.
As usual Vampires are super cool evil beings with awesome powers and humans are dumb and helpless except for the FMC who is a complete anamoly.
Again, like YA novels we are expected to believe that a teenager has the maturity and wherewithal to save the stupid humans from themselves.
The only interesting characteris killed off at the end of the book.
I think the only part that had me finish the novel was that the actual writing was good. There was a backbone of a decent world in there even if the MMC and FMC were so unlikable and the plot was questionable.
The story is so terrible that I was going to bypass Carissa Broadbent's other series "The War of lost Hearts". But I am glad that I gave that one a try as it's so different, the characters are better written and the storyline and world building and characters are just so much better I can't believe it's the same writer. The MMC is one of my favourites

This novel does not live up to the hype.
It starts off well enough. The world is interesting. Misery, the FMC, starts out as a snarky and fun character.
Unfortunately it doesn't last.
Lowe, the MMC, is a flat character. He isn't much more than a bunch of muscles who flexes muscle and is kind of sad... But tough. He has a bad haircut. He is supposed to be an architect but he has the personality of a CFO. Snore.
The story is kind of dull and predictable.
The spice is not memorable. I don't get off on this scenting scene everyone raves about.
Once again vampires fail to impress
