This series started out so well but I think 6 books was a stretch.  In this last book there were chapters where nothing happens outside of the FMC or one of her bonds talk about how much they love each other and how much they've changed since they first met.

The author has introduced so many new characters but just drops them as soon as they've served their purpose.

I know that some readers don't like the epilogues of years down the road with kids and silly interactions but this whole book was a bit of a let down.

I have to remove .25 from the rest of the series since the action takes place in Alaska in the height of summer and the nights are long and dark.

Even if it's along the BC border, the southernmost part of Alaska, it's just lazy writing to not incorporate the fact that the sun shines for nearly 24 hrs in the summer.  Maybe twilight or dusk but not "it's still dark out, the sun hasn't risen yet"

The author lives in Australia so maybe does not understand the north well but not recognizing the land of the midnight sun breaks the suspension of belief.

Bottom line: if I was writing about the outback I'd make sure I did some research even if I thought my audience would get the gist of it.

Im burning through these books so quickly it's hard to give a separate review to each one.

See previous book for review .  Will probably write a another review after book 6.

Quality and story keeps throwing interesting plot turns.

Still enjoying this series.  It took a turn I wasn't expecting but it's an interesting take on the nature of bonds and what they mean.

I could consider taking .25 off the rating because there isn't alot of spicy bits but that's just me.  The sex scenes are good.  And there is enough storyline so it doesn't get boring like authors that stretch out the story to make it seem like a slow burn when they are just avoiding the inevitable

There are a lot of negative reviews about this series but I'm enjoying it so far.  It has all the elements I like in a RH with an academy setting.

Sure it's repetitive and there isn't anything new but if I enjoy the characters and the writing isnt insulting my intelligence I'm all in

How does a man tell women's stories so well?

This is the 2nd Grady Hendrix novel I've read this year and it's so heartbreaking and yet the old school horror elements make it so readable.  You don't realize that the nightmare you are actually trapped in is the horror of what it is like being a woman.  How we have been oppressed in the past and although we are no longer forced to go to maternity houses there are still so many ways we are still losing

I discovered I had cousin a few years ago.  My uncle was the father in this case and even though we all accepted her into the family to this day he will not acknowledge that she exists. Despite DNA evidence.  Her mother was forced to go to a maternity house and give her up for adoption.  There are generations of hurt out there.  She was not the product of an affair or SA. Her mother was not over 18 but unmarried so still a sin.  And this is where the US would like to return.

Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

There is a dreamlike quality to the magic realism genre that carries throughout this book.  It's wistful and bittersweet.  I love that Harrow describes her protagonists as seeing each other as "ugly" but love each other despite their looks, or maybe because of it.
At the core this book is a romance and the old adage that home is wherever you are loved.   Or that love is what makes a house a home.   Or something more profound about loneliness in the modern world.

In any case it's a fine story and the narration is excellent.
