Not horrible but not amazing either. I was pretty into it for the first half of the book but then the turn it took wasn’t what I expected and it didn’t go in a direction i would’ve preferred. I was hoping for more horror than character connecting but I loved the descriptions of the house and the creepy stuff happening there. Mushrooms are cool! The eugenics stuff was horrible and they are icky people. Also what the heck was going on with Noemi and Vergil;
still not entirely sure what was his pull on her/ control and what was her actual thoughts. Because she kept saying he was attractive and that Francis was ugly in comparison but then hated and wanted Vergil? Then ended up with Francis cause he was better like idk I know she didn’t actually want Vergil it was just weird.
Not much else to say honestly.
While I am happy Francis and Noemi end up together I wasn’t too happy with the ending; it fell flat and felt like it got wrapped up too easily.

I love a good retelling and Poe is definitely one of my favorites so I enjoyed this very much. It had the right amount of creepy and gross aspects. I love the setting of an old dilapidated house with mold and the likes; I also loved the fungal focus. Finding out more about the tarn was cool too! Nonbinary main character was cool too, but the backstory was a bit short even if this is a short retelling. Still enjoyed the story as a whole. I happen to be reading Mexican Gothic at the same time while reading this and the authors note mentions it which is funny cause the fungi and old house are also a theme; I can feel the inspiration in both books.

Beautifully written and  intriguing idea. The overall events weren’t especially captivating but the narrative and scene as a whole will stick with me. There are so many unanswered questions which is intentional but I still want to know more. I liked that the narrator offered a perspective that was not biased by life as we know it; she is an example of how someone could grow up with no social bias or knowledge of most things but still be clever in her way of life. A lot of this book was sad and somewhat mundane but not in a bad way.

This book was better than I thought it would be! It’s definitely on the slower side and I was a bit bored at first because i’m used to reading more fantasy based fiction. However, the story told was so sweet it was hard not to love. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs, especially the octopus! Tova and Cameron’s stories are both sad so I was routing for them the whole time. Nice read if you want a happy ending and not too much action.

This one had me hooked, I honestly had no idea where it was heading until it went in that direction. I loved the setting and the secrets that each character held.
Finding out that Robin was the one writing letters and not Amelia was definitely a good twist. I was a bit confused by Adam saying his wife cheated too tho? Am i imagining that or did i miss something cause i don’t think either of them cheated unless he meant Amelia cheating with him against Robin. Also how on earth did they get away with what they did. I loved that no one was innocent tho, especially Adam. I also wish that Robin came forward about Henry’s death so she could get credit for her work.
All the twists were so good and the ending was pretty solid too.

This was good because I’ve already read the manga and it gives a bit more insight into the characters. Not sure it would be as good without the manga backing it but still enjoyable. I was definitely hoping for more but it followed the manga pretty much. Although I feel like you get more of how Yoshiki is feeling which is great. Still will be getting the next volume because i love the series!

This book started off sooo good and the premise is also super interesting but it fell off at the end for me; but the wholesome bits were nice I guess. I feel like 30 years is a long time to let past before solving a crime.
I was also hoping there would be more ghost aspects but as soon as they said Andy was off the grid I knew it had to be him. Ethan was kind of dumb for thinking the ball thing was only known between him and Billy when Andy was always just there. But I guess I can let it slide since he wasn't in a great state of mind. The Claudia twist was unexpected and very sad, especially since he changed his mind, but at least he gets Henry! Also damn Ashley just messed up so many lives for YEARS, she should have come clean and I know she mentioned that Henry was why but he was only 10, she had 20 years before him to fess up. Then she was all there for Ethan like she didn't kill his bestfriend and make him think someone took him? Wild.
I wish the Hawthorne Institute had more spooky roots and that they went into more detail about Johnny.
I wish Ragesh had a chance to talk to him and figure things out with him, that was rough.
Overall the characters were complex and fun but it didn't go in a way I wish it did.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would based on the reviews! The setting in kentucky with gothic elements and spooky vibes were perfect. I loved the house that was alive and craved attention. I loved Arthur’s relationship with the house and his pettiness to punish it when it does things he doesn’t agree with.
I also kinda love that Arthur is described as ugly?? like his crow like features and description is fitting and perfect for the book, love me an ugly boy.
I liked how flawed Opal was as a character so that when she did things I didn’t like I could still understand her.
I also loved her rough edges like her viscous smile and wild red hair, her and Arthur are perfect for each other!
Seriously this book was fun! So many great stories within and reading it in April felt fitting due to the many mentions of flowers, wisteria, sun and the river; I could really picture this house because of it.

This book had so many twists and felt different from most mysteries/thrillers due to the time travel aspect! I loved learning more with Jen as she went back. Only some twists were guessable but even so it was written very well. I liked that we also got different povs throughout too, like more information to add but not knowing why it’s going to be important yet. The timeline confused me for some of those parts tho. My only complaint is that it dragged on a bit with how far back she went. I also wish it ended slightly before it did
I wish she had remembered everything but I guess that would make her life kind of confusing.
