I read The Diablo’s Curse by this author and really enjoyed that book but this one fell short for me.
What I liked:
The fast paced fantasy adventure plot where the MC enters a deadly competition to save their uncles. Found family, gods, twists, secrets, world building
What didn’t work for me:
The romance felt forced. The political undertones were way too much for me and took away from the plot. I almost DNF but I liked the action so I wanted to see how it ended.

This first book in a Romantasy series has the slow burn pace of From Blood and Ash. There are gods, a missing mother, hidden powers, and so many secrets. The romance in this is more of a yearning leading up to the rest of the series. Interested to see where it goes.

This one reminded me of Serpent & Dove with the religious vibes.
Exorcists v demons set in Vatican City. The romance is more of a subplot with a fake dating trope. I liked the FMC, a powerful exorcist and the mystery of the MMC. The world building made me lose interest a little bit but if you are a fan of Serpent & Dove you will like this one.

Genre: Small Town Mystery
A woman estranged from her family returns to her small town to help search for her missing mother.
Really good debut! It’s filled with family trauma, parental abuse, alcoholism, and dysfunction all mixed together into a mystery. The whole story is based off of the main character accidentally backing up a car into her mother (who survives) and she ends up for going to prison for that. It didn’t seem believable for her to serve that much jail time and it bothered me the whole book.
But other than that… solid dysfunctional small town mystery.

This was one was very well written. I listened to it on audio and the narration made it even better. The story is captivating and even though it isn’t really that fast paced the tension of the forbidden romance keeps you reading. It almost reminded me of The Song of Achilles in the way it reads.

Didn’t love this one as much as the first. There were parts that kept my attention mostly with Zhara from the first book. I didn’t care for the asexual storyline. It felt forced and was hard to read switching from their/him/her. The romance was a little cringey too.
I did like the adventure/quest part and wanted more of that.

It picks up right where the first book left off. You might have to read a recap to remember everything. It all comes together nicely at the end when things are revealed.
