i saw the resulution for the mystery like from a Mile away but this was still a pretty cute book, even though tried too hard at some parts, but the magic system was fun and the romance had an interesting dynamic. i had a bit of a hard time picturing the characters and keeping track of names, they felt a bit underdescribed, but it wasn't a problem.
a fun read.
a fun read.
Spoiler
i wasn't expecting the sex right off the bat, but them being switches was pretty cool given that's so rare to see??? noice.
dec.23 - jan.24 reread
took me forever to finish this reread because i simply didn’t want to go through that one final stress as everything unraveled and fell into place. oof.
on my first read through, i found this to be my favorite book in the trilogy, but now, upon rereading, i think it’s actually the second book. which is funny because i could only love the second book more after reading the third, and that’s just kudos all around.
c. s. pacat has written a series of exquisite slow burn, friends to lovers, a specific brand of pining and longing, with a dash of political intrigue and an impressive gift to highlighting the exact things to make you love a character. and it’s almost devastating how hard it is to come upon something as well written as this, in these tropes specially, outside the realm of fanfiction.
i can’t wait to read more mature work from her, whenever, and if it ever comes, i’m just waiting for her ya trilogy to be completed to read it.
ugh, i barely spoke of this book itself,,, but my mans, if you’re looking for a reason to read this trilogy and stumble upon this review, if you have anything of the same taste as i, just read it.

first review (aug.23)
i did NOT expect to enjoy this book quite as much as i did?? but this series was genuinely enemies to lovers and the slowest of burns and this third and final installment is For Sure the best book out of the three.
is this the best series ever? no. is this quite problematic in some stances? yes, ofc. was this Wildly Entertaining? Yes!!!!

from the moment i finished this trilogy, i've wanted to return and start back over again. that is HUGE praise coming from me.
re-reading this first book after being done with all three is an exercise of looking at things with new knowledge, which is always so satisfying when you manage to pick up nuance that flew way above your head before. lol.
i can't say that this is a masterpiece on intricacy, but i Can say that surely didn't read it this carefully the first time around, and this is a prime book for rereads, specially when you've come to love some characters as much as i did.
captive prince is certainly not the best book out of the trilogy (which has its flaws, ofc, as a whole), it has the unnecesary rape culture way out on your face, yikes, and the whole thing with slaves... but man, man oh man, the thing that makes this series so enjoyable for me (and many others, so it seems) is the slow burn, the slowest of burns, and now on the reread, knowing damen and laurent better!! just scrumptious, i'm afraid.
now to what i actually Have to critize is pretty simple, the world building is kind of lacking, specially given how damen is only ever in his chambers and how little we know of the world around him. which is quite frustrating. which brings me to something i saw in a review somehwere "if you don't plan on showing the worldbuilding to a more plausible extent, why go with imaginary lands at all?".
anywya, i first read this in august and it is now december, since then, i have reletlessly looked for books that could make me feel even a third of what kings rising got from me and it would be impossible to feel that much if we hadn't gotten the rough start of the damen/laurent relationship in captive prince. sadly i have found only a handful of books that come somewhat close to inspiring me as much as this trilogy. alas, i guess you truly can't ever compare anything to your first love.
i not only recommend this trilogy, but i strongly rec you read it at least twice– as i'm doing right this moment.

this was a Solid book
boy am i Delighted when i manage to find a book like this. there was mystery! there was world building! there was magic! betrayal! intrigue! sexy times! compelling characters! gigantic magical cats! and now a whole series set in the same universe with different characters?? count me the fck in.
I basically swallowed whole the enterity of the Middle Land Series by [a:K. L. Noone|40953046|K. L. Noone|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png], and I am constantly on the hunt for books (and series) that make me feel like that, that have that feeling of fantasy but with romance and at least a bit more mature than your average ya so i don't roll my eyes at teenagers (oof, i'm getting Old). and this, i think, will be it for me for the coming days, lol.
anyways, this was a very entertaining book. it didn't blow my mind, but it very much amused me and i did leave a bunch if highlights and that's always a good sign. my favorite one ahead:

Spoiler
The space between them is meaningless when Julien's presence suffuses every particle of air, fogging the glass around Whisper's heart.
i'm finding that i quite like low stakes stories to get some chill reading done during times of stress. no swooping heroes or gripping adventures, just a handsome vampire guy who can't handle technology yet and his artistic soon to be girlfriend. yea, somethings weren't all that well developed and it was all very chill, but in a good way. this gave me a good brain tickle and i recommend it for anyone who just wants something nice and cozy to read.
oh, also, i didn't expect this book to be an explicit-open-door type of situation and it caught me almost off guard, but it didn't throw me off at all, it was actually pretty good as far as smut scenes go, i just wished the vampiric side of things was explored more, lol.
