Robin Hood retellings are always a favorite, and this one is no exception. With a new twist on each of the characters in the band of merry men, the story takes on an interesting dynamic, since Robin is actually not a very good archer, and it is Marian who is better known for her skills with the bow. Little John, Alan-a Dale, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet, and Robin's childhood best friend, Much, all join the Sherwood crew at different times, each with their own story and their own personality.
I love that this book is full of interesting dialogue, hidden meanings behind every glance, and characters with a depth that develops through the changing story. The tale takes so many turns, never changing the basics of the Robin Hood legend, but throwing in new and different details that give it lots of spice.
It was especially fun to see how the rumors and tales of the 'great' Robin Hood are circulated through the people of Nottingham, and the "facts" get distorted, so that everyone believes he is a superb archer, a wily woodsman, and a powerful leader. But the Robin that we see in the story is mostly an ordinary individual, running from the law, trusting his friends, and just trying to keep everyone alive through another winter.
I enjoyed this so much!

I found this really helpful with clear answers to questions I didn't even know to ask! Very informative and thorough, but all the information is broken up into small paragraphs with clear headings, so that it doesn't all blur together. Easy to read, and get the answers in an understandable and memorable way.
Bali is the smallest member of his tribe, always stumbling into trouble, unable to throw a spear in the hunts, and a general nuisance. He ventures into the darkest forest to prove himself, and discovers the hiding place of the legendary sword of Mali Mani. The evil Rooks are after the sword, and Bali must brave the dangers of the forest to keep the sword and its power from falling into their hands.
I loved the artwork in this graphic novel! There is such a contrast between the white snows of the village fields, and the lush green forest environment. There are these beautiful designs carved into everything- rocks, creatures, trees, and the masks of the tribal men. As though some ancient civilization had etched their history into every stone and plant, most surfaces are covered in intricate patterns reminiscent of the Aztecs and Mayans.
I love the legend of Mali Mani, and his retrieval of the light from a fearsome beast. There is such a rich history in this story, and it makes the perfect setting for little Bali and his adventure. Everything that happens to Bali has long shadows in the past giving it more depth and meaning.
Little Bali himself is helpless, and small, and extremely determined! I love how fearless he is, rushing into the forest and facing down wild beasts. He is curious, and funny, and deadly serious as only a child can be. I can't wait to see more character development from him in future volumes!
I am very interested to find out more about the magic system of this world. The sword is definitely magical, and the Rooks have a mysterious dark power. I want to know more about how this ancient magic connects to the legend of Mali Mani and the sword and the old gods of myth in this world.

Young Bali has found the ancient sword of legendary Mali Mani, and the Rook men are hunting for the sword in the depths of the dark forest. Bali meets an unexpected ally, who is not all he appears to be. Dodging the fearsome beasts of the forest, and hiding from the Rooks, Bali is unsure who he can trust, but learns to trust his own judgement and the light of the sword.
I loved this 2nd volume, because Bali is adorable, and because the story is full of magic, action, and mystery. The plot really gets moving in this volume with new characters and a deeper look into the world-building.
The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and once again I was entranced by the elaborate designs carved into every stone and tree. It reflects the rich history of this world, to see the etchings of an ancient civilization in every corner of the forest. It lends a depth of meaning to every turning of Bali's adventure, since there are echoes from the legends of the past surrounding the sword.
Little Bali has the most amazing luck I have ever seen, as he accidentally trips and falls into.... safety. He is constantly at the edge of danger, and barely manages to escape or hide at the last second. Perhaps it is the protection of the sword, or perhaps Bali is simple fortunate with the blessedness of a child. Either way, the action kept me on the edge of my seat.
Can't wait to read more from this series!

A book about food for foodies who love food. This author REALLY enjoys food. Really. Which is hopeful, since so many people think of a gluten-free diet as being bland and boring and difficult. I love the way this author infuses joy and excitement into gluten-free living. This reads more like a memoir than a how-to or recipe book, but it is well-written and interesting. It was inspiring to read how the author overcomes obstacles, releases a dark past, and pushes forward into a new life without gluten, finding health and happiness.
I was expecting a lot more from this book. It has fairly basic beauty tips, a couple of which were actually new to me, most of which I had heard dozens of times before. Wear sunscreen. Purple eyeshadow brings out your green eyes. Use moisturizer.
I wish that there had been photos to demonstrate the different makeup looks, but there was not one photo or diagram in the entire book. Just cartoon illustrations that kept repeating from chapter to chapter.
Disappointed, but it was okay. It reads like a long magazine article.

Margaret is tired of playing with a small theater company, so when the opportunity arises for her to go to an audition in London, she jumps at the chance. Things seem to be going well for Margaret, until the evil Matron from Margaret's old orphanage is seen skulking around the theater, searching for Margaret in order to take her revenge.
I loved this charming book about a young stage actress at the turn of the century. The characters are vivid and interesting, and I enjoyed the engaging plot. There are a few twists and turns in the plot, but most of its charm comes from the sweetness of the characters, and their close ties to the theater.
I especially liked the details of Margaret's clothes and costumes, and how she got her schooling, and the obstacles between her friendships with the various children around the theater. Those things added an interest and reality to the story.
The ending was rushed, and I wish there had been a few more chapters of denouement, but other than that, I enjoyed the story!

Rapunzel escapes from her tower, and must travel through the Wild West countryside to rescue her true mother from the coal mines of the evil witch. She teams up with Jack, and they travel from town to town, saving people and doing good.
I loved this graphic novel! It's full of adventure and magic, and the dialogue is hilarious! I loved Rapunzel's rebellious spirit, and her kindness and compassion for all the suffering people of the Western towns. I loved her silly camaraderie with Jack, and how their friendship grew through their adventurous exploits.
Great characters, an interesting story with lots of action, and gorgeous colorful illustrations that pulled me into this tall tale. Can't wait to read the next one!
