I'm at the point of my life that I can't deal with wishy-washy female characters. I am also done with characters that are so incredibly hostile to other women just to move the plot forward.

Absolutely love the color palette with the contrasting reds and blues. I appreciate how the artist used these two tones to depict the characters but also how these two colors were used in the background to highlight their connection.

Since this is a Caldecott Medal winner, I looked at both the story and the illustrations. The illustrations are beautiful and fantastically detailed.
The story? I hate to use the phrase "a product of it's time" but holy cow is this a bit much. It's worth keeping in a collection merely as a way of starting a conversation with how some language does not age well.
