This was...interesting though also couldn't fully invest in it.
This honestly felt a bit too Watchmen-Lite for me. A bunch of heroes from the 60's get put away and brought back to our reality, in 2008 or so, and have to adjust. The idea sounds cool, and each character here takes turns getting used to the reality. The book focuses on a wide range of things from racism to sexism, and it tries to treat each character with a interesting backstory.
I think JMS does a admirable job here giving us a BIG cast to really find interesting. For the most part characters were pretty good and the dialogue strong enough. I also think the idea of it all is enjoyable, almost like a M-rated Captain America for all. Some moments really shined in the suspense and sadness of life.
On flip side the pacing is dreadfully slow at points and the dialogue can get a bit...bad. The in your face racism moments and sexism are hard to swallow, not because well done, but just because of the cringe you feel. I also thought the build up to the end was better than the actual cliffhanger.
Overall, interesting, but nothing amazing. I might grab volume 2 down the line but for what it was it is decent. A 3 out of 5.

This book is tough one to review.
So it starts off simple enough. Abel lives with an abusive father who beats him and treats him like shit. One day the boy snaps and tells his father to go fuck himself. In this moment his father becomes a giant tornado and destroys the city they live in and Abel runs off. Sounds like a typical coming of age story, huh?
The thing here is that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVEEEEEEE the art. It's probably some of my favorite ever. I also enjoyed the bitter moments with the family drama. His father was a complete asshole, maybe too over the top at times, but it felt real. Abel's pain felt real. I also enjoyed Abel's talk with his Fox sidekick. All of that was good-great.
However, all the side characters come off as a complete bore. I didn't care about the carnival message, and yes I got it, choosing your family verses who you get stuck with. None of that was interesting and the ending felt kind of anti-climatic for me.
Overall, a interesting spin on things. Not everything panned out but the art is still amazing enough to read this book. A 3.5 out of 5.

The end of the Sam Humphries run! Least goes out with a bang.
After the last volume we're in some serious trouble. Simon loses his ring and Jessica has to step up. Except this time they get thrown back in time. Yep. THROWN BACK IN TIME. So what do they do without Green Lantern corps OR Justice League? We're gonna have the FIRST of the Green Lanterns all coming together but they aren't getting along too well.
I really enjoyed some of the fights here. The first green lanterns are pretty badass but they each have a chance to get completely wrecked and killed, and I love that feeling of not sure who will life. I also think the art still solid though the sudden change is a little weird. I enjoyed the final chapter too as it was both fun and heartfelt.
NOT a huge fan of the big bad here. I thought he would turn out more interesting but in the end he came off kind of lame.
Overall, a fun ending to a pretty great series. Some weaker volumes but still overall solid and a great run for newcomers and old fans alike. A 3.5 out of 5 but I'll bump it to a 4.

Well that was depressing...but I shouldn't expect anything less from the awesome writer of Stray Bullets.
If anything should take a darker turn, go into the worst places, and the worst of humanity, it's Gotham and Batman. This is the story of Bruce trying to solve a murder. Well, it starts that way anyway. It feels more personal this time as Bruce blames himself for the death of a young teenager and then tries to go on a missing girl hunt. However, as he gets deeper, we learn how twisted the city has become. Someone is hunting people down, killing them, and getting away with it either. Featuring some big villains, and a new one I've never heard of, this intense story arc is Bruce facing some of his greatest threats and fears.
This is a pretty interesting set up. Bruce feels vulnerable in here and his guilt mixed with his act of heroism makes this an intense tale. It's also darker, which is saying a lot for Batman since the majority of his stories are, but this one really is. A lot of young dead people, which is hard to read, and also a lot of focus on Gotham itself. Sometimes even more so than Bruce, and that remains interesting. Gotham is like a even dirtier, more fucked up version, of New York City. I was eager to find out what would happen next to almost every character, while also having a great supporting cast and voice for people like Robin.
I did think sometimes it was stretched a little long and some plot points weren't as interesting as others.
Overall though, this really impressed me. While not AS good as Stray Bullets, it's one of the more interesting self contained Batman stories. A 4 out of 5.

This was pretty damn exciting!
Right off the bat we have the evil Green Ranger from a different reality planning the ultimate victory. After the betrayal of a certain someone last volume the Green Ranger has the idea to take over everything. Not just one universe, but all. He begins to take different ranger powers from different universes to be the ultimate villain for everyone. You now have all the power rangers from different universes working together to try and stop him.
It's both exciting and interesting. To learn the deeper mythos of DC is a ton of fun and I also thought some deaths were a huge surprise. The art remains solid and you have a ton of great fight scenes on top of shocking moments. This is probably one of the best volumes of the series. I'm hoping it keeps good. A 4 out of 5.

And that wraps up the final issue.
The big reveal happened last issue but this ties it all up. The consequences of actions, even if they didn't mean to do it, now have to have a payoff. The idea of loss, and hope, and trying to fill it all in isn't easy. I think the major turnout worked for most part, and the cases of watching each person go through their fears in the interviews, is still the highlight.
A bit over complicated at times and a tad confusing, as all time traveling stories are, but it worked out. Without spoilers there's a scene I truly love in this issue too.
I'll go into one big review once I get my hands on the hardcover complete series and go over everything but for the most part this issue wrapped it up nicely despite some bumps in the middle. A 4 out of 5.

This was actually pretty well done.
Kieron ends his X-Men run by telling his final tale of Cyclops and his time in prison. After the events of Avengers vs X-Men, Cyclops is satisfied with being in Prison. He did NOT mean to kill the professor and the Phoenix Force did make him. However, he wants to stay where he is, take the punishment, and if something happens to him he'd be a icon for X-men and mutants alike. A few visits from different people you get to see cyclops decide on his final choice before Bendis takes over writing for Uncanny X-Men.
Overall, satisfying ending to Kieron's ending. The art was solid, the storyline worked well, and cyclops choices made sense. The magneto and side stuff was okay at best. Wish they gave Hope more to do. ANyway, better than the event itself, it worked well enough. A 3 out of 5.

Swamp Thing TV show is out in 2 days (when I'm writing this) so I decided to finally finish the last volume of my collection.
Swamp Thing is just doing his training, be a cool dude, when a new "race" I guess you can call them comes to be. The Rot, The Green, The Red, and more have shown themselves. Now? Now we have the MACHINES! They want everything to run smooth and do it their way. They even off Swamp Thing a way out of his responsibilities. When he refuses they turn to a new idea, a Avatar for themselves, and what is the ultimate weapon? The ones who want revenge on swamp thing.
This is a great finisher. Some single issues between the main machine storyline work real well too. Some hard hitting ones about letting go, saying goodbye, changing who you are, and more. All the themes I wanted in Swamp Thing. I also thought the machine storyline was great and always gripping with a big bad that actually scared me. The last issue was a bit rushed and didn't fit the pacing of the rest of the volume though.
Overall, a great ending to a pretty solid series. While not always amazing for me, there were some really great volumes. This is one of them. A 4 out of 5.

Ouch...Love Brisson's work most of the time, love X-Force, but this was a miss for me.
The idea of bringing most of the original characters back to X-Force was nice. We have young cable on a mission after murdering his old self. He's trying to protect someone. That someone is a semi-spoiler so won't spoil it here. On top of that you have the X-Force team hunting down Young Cable for what he did to old cable, which was kill him, in the Extermination Event (Which was pretty good). So yeah...that plus a lot of time travel begin to happen in this title.
I was really hoping for just a straight forward X-Force brutal mission. Instead it's a lot of jumping around time, a messy origin that wasn't needed, a dull villain, and some sketchy art. There's moment of fun dialogue, and cool action shots, but it's not often enough. Didn't hate it but a missed opportunity for sure. A 2 out of 5.

Been so long since seen first few episodes of Monster that I completely forgot about. Picking up the perfect edition I was excited to hop back in.
This is the story of a doctor named Tenma, and his life changed the night he decided to save a boy's life. This is the work of any doctor, their whole job is to help those who need helping. Tenma didn't know that the day he choose to do the operation on the boy instead of the mayor would change his life in more ways than one. Since he gave up on a big case and the mayor died, he got demoted and basically dragged by the hospital head chief as a nobody for choosing to save a child's life over an important icon. However, that boy grows up to me a major serial killer as he goes through his childhood and teen years. Tenma decides he must find this killer before he keeps slaughtering people.
I really enjoyed this one. It's a slow burn without a doubt so it takes a bit to get warmed up to. Urasawa never will never shy away from having more human moments for the characters to let them grow. His build on their life and persona in public and in their own thoughts is all well done. The villain in here is both frightening and devious. I can't wait to see more of him. The political nature of a job is also a interesting world that anyone who works or worked in corporate places knows how it goes.
I'm eager to continue the series. It has slow moments, and some things like everyone seems to die if Tenma doesn't do the operation, is a bit odd. But overall it's a great read and well worth the title as one of the best manga ever. A 4.5 out of 5.
