So many red herrings and layers to this one. I enjoyed all the maybe’s and what-ifs. I had a few guesses that turned out to be right but not necessarily the way I thought, so while it wasn’t exactly super surprising it was an intriguing way to get there. The different character perspectives also kept it interesting.

I kind of lost the plot on this one. It felt like the majority of the book was either lots of detail on the artifact/setting history and backstory or lots of detail on the MC's physical relationship. There just wasn't much in the development of their relationship besides them in their heads about past hurts and anxiety. It just felt sad and a bit depressing to me, honestly, for a lot of it. I felt like there could have been much more developed on the artifact moving that could have brought intrigue to the book over the more historical/clinical outlook on the items or land.

On the plus side, I liked the character highlight of someone with autism for Catriona, since I have an autistic daughter. The majority of her characteristics felt pretty well done. 

Amanda’s writing is always incredible - pulling you into deep parts of the characters like you’re learning their secrets and hidden emotions that somehow speak to your own. 

I really liked the story, which took on a treasure hunt in effect. I wish I had read it at least semi close to Whose Waves These Are but I read that so long ago I don’t remember much of it. Maybe it’ll be a reread this year. I didn’t quite get the land selling at the very end. I wish there was more clarity or closure on that because it felt unfinished. But it was a novella prequel so it probably makes more sense back to back.

I liked hearing about Germany after the war and how complicated it was, rather than a simple resolution of the Germans who lived as Nazi’s or the Jews who came back to Germany. It sort of had a little bit of a Nazi Hunter feel to it. The mystery was well done and not predictable. 

The story itself was enormously sad tho. Realistic in some ways probably but so very sad. It painted a picture of the need of forgiveness without repentance or sometimes resolution. But it wasn’t a happy story either. 

Really well written and portrayed. 

This is a hard one to rate because the facts were interesting but it was written more like a nonfiction book, not a fictional novel. 

This is the 3rd book about the 6888th I’ve read and I liked the different perspective that dealt with the military bases holding WACs the 6888th started from, besides Ft Des Moines, which is what the other books were set in because Charity Adams was there. There were also more/different stories, more perspectives, and more facts that this book brought to light, and honestly did it in a really great way - but if it was a nonfiction book. 

However, it was the proverbial tell rather than show - it walked you thru facts and events but didn’t get to a character level or let you see thru the characters’ eyes. It was more an education. So while I enjoyed the book, I didn’t care for the format having one foot in both worlds. I kind of wish it had just picked one and developed it as is.

While I liked learning about the Champagne growers/winemakers working in the Resistance,I found all the characters rather unlikeable. They all were betraying each other, some were cold and uncaring, others were childish and petty and whiny. It was super annoying. It just soured what could have been a great setting for me.

I really enjoyed this one. Colleen Hoover has a way of making you so emotionally invested in the characters. There were a lot of heart wrenching scenarios when they made one sided decisions or weren’t honest with each other but you felt the hope and wholeness that selfless love gave them as well.
