It’s fine I just WEPT my way through this cute #ownvoices MG graphic memoir about the author growing up after losing her hearing. Bell writes movingly about the experience of deafness as a child and contextualizes her experience in a great author’s note at the end. I learned a lot and want to save this to share with my kids one day.

WHATTA RIDE. It’s super unbelievable with soap-opera levels of drama, which makes it perfect for a social distancing read. Go in for fun and stay for the crazy. The ending was abrupt, but it was a great distraction from the world.

This is the only Díaz I’ve read besides Oscar Wao and I am conflicted. He’s a talented writer for sure, but the way he writes about women coupled with the sexual misconduct violations a while back (which MIT cleared him of, to be fair) make me uncomfortable. Women aren’t objects. Men are more than sexual desire. But all this book does is preach the opposite for 213 pages.

I love me a good serial killer novel and this one delivered. Caitlin Hendrix is a spectacular detective. She's smart, vulnerable, witty, and so human. The Prophet, loosely used on the Zodiac killer, is an equally good killer—methodical and engaging.
This book manages to not only deliver and engaging hunt for a killer, but also explores ideas of family, legacy, and the danger of becoming too involved in a way that was delightfully fresh.
