I am on a mission to work through Catherine Cowles back list and I have found myself back in Sutter Lake, and I am loving being here.
I loved the patience Liam showcased in getting to know Tessa. There were many walls to breakdown and I loved seeing them work together to get there. It was swoony and sweet and full of that slow burn passion as Tessa found a safe place to be in Liam.
Fantastic suspense as always, while this one had more of a clear indicator on where the action was going to come from but that didn’t take away from the intensity. I loved it all, and a great audiobook too!
Overall audience notes:
Romantic Suspense
Language: moderate
Romance: 3ish open door
Violence: moderate
Trigger/Content Warnings: gun violence, murder, partner abuse (primarily physical), a stalker with mental health issues

NOT A BAD LISTEN.

I enjoyed this one but also don’t feel wholly connected to it? It was an interesting premise and I liked the characters well enough.
The romance had a lot of subtle and sweet moments. There was some good chemistry between Jess and Adam. I do think it leaned into the physicality of their relationship more than it needed (or made sense) for this kind of story line. The third act made me cranky, but I did like the couple in the end.
I wasn’t all that surprised by where the missing mother ended up and those scenes. It was much more on the predictable side. I do think the audio production was well done and that made for a good listen.
Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Mystery + Romance
- Language: moderate
- Romance: 3+ open door
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: parental abandonment

I am just smitten with this duo y’all. I adore Ezren and Foster and I can’t tell y’all how much I LOVED that they WORKED TOGETHER. Bless the fact that there wasn’t ridiculous drama between the main couple. There was still tension and romance, it was just formulated differently and I was able to fall in love with them more because of it. The outside forces caused the chaos and had me gripping my kindle needing to know who made it out alive.
I liked the continuation of the story too. There’s a bit more politicking and interweaving of keeping friends close and enemies closer. I liked the switching sides and the newly added characters too. I love the found family and tight knit friendships. I love the high level of action and seeing the expansion of the world and systems. I felt lots of emotions and loved seeing the familial reconnections woven throughout too.
This was a full story (not a standalone though, definitely read book one first, which I also loved), but there was some room to continue as well. I would definitely read the next book.

SWOONY.

I liked this one a lot. After getting off on the wrong foot seeing Noli and Collin come together in a fake dating scheme brought out some fantastic banter and the forced proximity moments I crave.
I struggled with the time spread throughout the book. This book covers a whole year and chapters would jump to the next month or two with only a small nod towards what happened prior. I wish the time had been condensed a little more. There was still plenty of showing vs. telling, but I kept feeling like I was missing something.
Collin has lots of swoony moments though and I loved watching him fall in love. It’s tender and he didn’t even realize how much he cared. I loved when he and Noli had good communication lines and took the time to get to know eachother.
I also didn’t understand why Noli kept her secret for so long. If she had brought it up soon after realizing she could trust Collin I feel like it could have played off better. There’s a little dash of suspense to bring things all together and wrap things up well.
Looking forward to the next book!

This book really grew on me. It started off pretty slow, but the further I got into it and the more I grasped the writing style the deeper the connection to the characters became. It’s a harrowing journey of love and loss and the strength it takes to move forward when everything is pushing you back.
I loved the historical elements and how they played in to the fantastical. I loved Sorcha. I ached for her at her lowest and cheered for her at her highest. The resilient nature she possessed was, at times, unfathomable. I loved how much she continually cared when others kept trying to make her hard.
There’s a subtle and soft romance that’s woven into this book too. I loved the intensity and sacredness of it and how the relationship came to be. The tension is palpable and all of the action scenes had my heart in my throat. I loved the balance of quiet and loud, I adored so many of the side characters and love the vibes of an older fantasy book.
I’m not sure if I’ll read the next? This was a standalone and the next book has a big time gap between the two. Maybe one day!

I thought cozy mysteries were my jam, but maybe not right now? Or after reading the Aunties series I saw many similarities and this hardly felt new. I have no big feelings towards the book, nothing I outright disliked, I just felt even toned about it all. And the plot was repetitive.
I think many would like this as there are some funny comments and also very serious themes that balance off of each other. I thought the sweet romance was cute and I liked the friendships and close family connections too. There’s lot of delicious food that definitely made me hungry while listening.
I don’t have plans to continue the series though.

I LOVED THIS?

I didn’t know what to expect going in (other than the trailers for S3), lo and behold, I found this friends to lovers fantastic. It had a sweet and swoony vibe and I love how the unrequited love became an all consuming romance.
I loved the care that Colin gave to Penelope over man facets of the plot and how Penelope learned to truly shine as herself. I loved seeing the whole Bridgerton family again and all the moments between just the family members.
It’s a great audiobook, and I loved the way Colin hadn’t even realized just how deep in love he was. It has the great slow quality and then BAM, Colin is head over heels just as we know Penelope always has been.

Gosh, Jenny Proctor, DOES NOT MISS. I have been anxiously waiting for another Appies books and this was incredible. An all consuming kind of romance with the push and pull angst that leaves you breathless. And the kissing scenes??? YES PLEASE.
I loved Nathan and Summer (yay for dual POV!). Their chemistry was so easy to see and you just felt that draw between them. I loved how Nathan’s struggles with relationships were handled and that he had space to work through his own trauma to find love with Summer. And I loved how brave and bold Summer was. She leaned into the fear of not knowing how the situation would unfold and I loved that for her. The dialogue and banter was, as always, swoony and fun. And I can’t get enough of the strong friendships and families throughout. I love the support the other Appies players provide and the comradery between everyone.
I could go on and on about how many scenes I adored (why yes, we get another JERSEY SCENE Y’ALL) and the sweetness of the relationship between Summer and Nathan. I loved everything about this.

CHAOTIC GOOD.

I binged this in a morning while chaotically packing for a trip and I think the balance of the chaoticness of this book really hit a mood I didn’t know I was in. This book is filled with drama, a FMC who absolutely does not have it together and a handsome man who needs her help. I didn’t even know this was a MOC book until I started it and I loved the set-up.
There were a few writing quirks that stood out, like how she kept referring to his 🍆 as “g*ddamn” that I just couldn’t understand the necessity. And this and that that stood out enough for this not to be a full five star.
I actually didn’t mind the drama because this book leans into it hard and I felt like that was the point. I wanted the drama, the escapism of this beachy kind of read and the enjoyment of a good romance. I liked how Anna and Liam figured things out and even though there was a benefits moment, you could tell they had insane chemistry together and the caring groundwork was already in place.
This is another tally in the win column for a CL book.

This was a great, quick read. I loved the Moana x How to Train Your Dragon vibes. It’s a fun adventure filled with sea dragons, pirates, and a good old fashioned quest. I loved the world and how the magic system with the dragons worked.
It’s a really great standalone and truly in the young adult category. I think many would enjoy it. I needed a bit more character depth and just something else. Not upset at all I picked it up though.
