I give this 3.5 stars. I like Karla’s writing style. It’s easy to read. I learned several things from this book - one that stands out is that after first responders the next biggest group of people to help after 9/11 were undocumented day laborers. My biggest complaint is that the stories didn’t go deeper. But that may have been because the folks the author was writing about didn’t want to say more. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

This story is so fascinating. First of all I cannot imagine having 12 children. That is hard enough. If one child was schizophrenic that would be so difficult—but 6?! What this family went through is astonishing. I liked how the scientific material was presented in a way that was digestible for a layperson so it didn’t interrupt the flow of the book for me. I was able to understand most of what I read. I had no idea schizophrenia is so misunderstood (or just not understood) despite being studied for so long and everyone knowing about it. This was a book I didn’t want to put down. If you like psychology and memoirs I recommend reading this book.
