The first time I read this was in physical format. I guess I had expectations for what I would read because my initial star rating was a 3.5. Luckily some of my book friends read it after me and sung its praises. I decided to listen to this on audio and~ wow. This is a 6 star poetic vulnerable work of art. I recommend everyone read this (especially on audio if you can). Kiese’s story is so raw and honest and I am so impressed by how self aware and willing to share all of himself he is. I love his thought process and sentence structure. I am not a poetry reader (it’s hard for me to understand) but his prose seems poetic to me. This book is so compelling and every time I listened to it it had my full attention. My mind didn’t wander at all. I love this book and I will read anything Kiese Laymon writes. Please read this book.

It’s pretty sweet. Good for someone who doesn’t like to read. Easy, fast and overall positive vibe.

The story was better than I expected. I was told there was a lot about food in the book (there is) and that doesn’t really interest me. Luckily, there was more to the story than that. The author explains her strained relationship with her terminally ill mother which made me reflect on my relationship with my mother who passed away from ALS. It also made me think about how I interact with my children. Although it has sad elements I also laughed out loud several times. It was easy to read and overall very enjoyable.
