I kept reading because I was intrigued. In the end, I was kind of disappointed. I didn't really enjoy the main character very much. I was waiting for some type of redemption moment for her, but I didn't really feel like it came around. Overall, I think the book was dealing with important issues through a lens that I don't identify with anymore. Therefore, It was a little underwhelming for me.

Wow! My second thriller ever and I loved it! Megan Miranda really knows how to get to me. Towards the end I couldn't put it down!

Reading this was a breath of fresh air! I forgot how much I absolutely love graphic novels.

My sister gave this to me yesterday for Christmas and I started reading it about 10 minutes later. I've always had a secret (not so secret if you know me) dream of one day becoming a sexologist. This book will definitely be added to my growing sexology library. I really loved being able to read about the construct of virginity and how it has impacted many different people. I loved this book!
I have been recommended this book countless times over the years and I've always said that it wasn't for me. However, when I saw the movie trailer, I realized that I wanted to read it before the movie came out. Not only because the movie looks amazing but also because my 4th graders are going to be watching the movie and then spoilers would be in the air like dust in an attic.
I'm still trying to put my thoughts together over how I feel about this book. It was enjoyable, but it felt like something was missing from it. I had a really hard time seeing the world. I had a hard time believing in the things that were happening in the book. I needed more world building or explanation or SOMETHING more to make me invested in the story. It was almost there, but not quite.
I'm sure I will interact with this book again in my teaching career and I'm hoping that reading it with students will make the experience a better one.

I wanted to read a book that was easy to read that I knew I would enjoy to end out the year. I got just that in this book. It wasn't the best thing I ever read, but I enjoyed it!
The first book of 2018 woo-hoo!
On New Years Eve, as my mother and I were waiting for the ball to drop, we were watching a Netflix docu-series about food. The series, Cooked, aligned almost perfectly with the eating habits that I have been following for the past couple of years. I wanted to read this book at the start of the year in order to jump-start the year with a reminder of the things that I value. The book did just that and I am so very excited to see what type of food adventures I will be going on this year <3

This book is about a black girl who's growing up in the predominantly white city of Portland, Oregon. I did not grow up in Portland, but I do live in the area now. It was so nice to read a book that is set in a place that I am familiar with. It did a really great job of illustrating the divide there is between the different sections of Portland. I wasn't able to identify with our main character, Jade, on everything, but it was really validating to read about a girl who looks like me who in growing up around where I am.
One thing I really enjoyed that this book looked at was conflict within a race. It is often that people believe that those in a minority group believe the same thing, but it was nice to see the conflict that arose from the diversity of opinion. It made the story more realistic. This especially connected with me because I live around Portland and the narratives that were highlighted were very similar to those that I see on the day to day.
I think the reason this book wasn't the most amazing thing for me is because I don't think it was written for me. I could totally identify with Jade and her struggle, but Jade is a junior in high school and I'm a senior in college. Some of the struggles that she went through, especially with friends, were things that I don't really interact with a whole lot anymore. I think I would have connected with the story a whole lot more if I would have read it in high school. I would LOVE to see what black girls at a Portland high school would think about this book. It wasn't written for me, it was written for them. I. Ant only hope that they would get the most out of it.

Fun read. Got this one from the girls over at the Reading Glasses podcast.
