This is the second time that I've been able to read this book, but this time I read it with students. IT made me enjoy this book way more than the last time. Kids can make everything magical.
Although my experiences were VERY different than the girls in this book, it’s important for me to see how others could be seeing me or treating me based on my race. This book also motivated me to reach out to a few of my favorite teachers to thank them for not giving up on me.
I really want to take some of the things I learned from this book and apply it to my classroom.
Meredith has lived quite a life. I feel grateful that she chose to share it with the world.
This one makes me wish that I taught middle school. I think that the majority of my kiddos are a little too immature to read this, but for those few kids who are ready, I will be recommending.
This one was just okay for me. I didn’t really have a pull towards this book but got it in a random book bundle from my library and I didn’t have any other books at the moment. I wasn’t really interested in the storyline, and I think that my rating shows that. It was interesting, but just not my cup of tea.
Emmanuel did a wonderful job of laying out the basics of many things pertaining to Black livelihood.
I will always strive to learn more about people with different experiences than my own. This book has definitely helped :)
This was REALLY sad. Like, really really sad. Surprisingly I didn't cry? But gah, so sad.
Sometimes you finish a book and you just want to hold it close to your heart and thank the universe for allowing you to encounter it when you did.
This book gave me that experience.
Don't let the small chapters trick you, they pack to punch. I cried. I processed. I was shown moments where I was able to see myself. I saw moments where I was granted the gift of seeing into experiences I have never experienced.
I grew up toxically religious and although I am not religious anymore. The connections and critiques of religion in this book really hit home for me.
UGH so many beautiful things. I learned so much. I need to read this again. I definitely recommend the audiobook for this one. UGh I may have to go start it right now. SO good!
