This book never had a dull or slow moment. It is one of those "one more chapter and I will go to bed" books. But one chapter turns into another that turns into another. I finished this in 2 sittings - partially because I was sort of sick the day I started it and slept about 6 hours more that day. It was such a thrilling read that kept me guessing. And I enjoyed all the military/marine-speak, as well. This is one of the first (may be the first?) straight up military thriller I have read and it ROCKED! Can't wait to start the followup novel, Sins of the Father!

So I do not know what to way about this book that won't give things away. I love that I knew nothing about this and as the story unraveled and more secrets were learned that they were completely and totally brand new and shocking to me. WOW! Great read and makes you wonder what's going on next door to you...

A big thank you to the author for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review - authors rock! This book sparked up feelings inside of me that I have not listened to in years. Newman does a great job at taking us back to our teenage years (well, maybe the guys, anyway) where everything is carefree, you bust each others chops, and talk about sex a lot. Yep. That's guys... but then one of the young guys is not like the others and the bullying and terror begins. My heart is heavy after reading this because it explores the monstrosities that live inside us, the fear of the unknown, and the things we do to fit in with the crowd. I also really loved the way the story was told and the event that incited the flashback story to be told to us. Years and years later and where are we going? Read this book. Listen to the message. Such a great, haunting, painful, and beautifully written story.

A haunting and exciting story of a grief stricken father and the horrors that he uncovers and deals with in the process. Burke's writing is eloquent, evocative, and eerie. a great read and I highly recommend! 4.5 out of 5!

review to come. I can't even formulate thoughts right now. BRILLIANT book!

this book was filled with some of my favorite things: horror, terror, lots of deaths, great character development, and a fantastic writing style that made everything work together. this book is unsettling and wonderful at the same time. Any horror fan MUST read!

thrilling. witty. sassy. on the edge of my seat. entertaining. addicting! I can't wait to read the rest of Miriam's stories!

I honestly don't know what the hell I just read, but I liked it! the writing, descent into madness (me or the narrator!?), and just the overall idea. what was even going on?!
