LOVED this. Honestly way more interesting than I thought it would be. She uses so many quotes and real-life examples throughout the book, gives great recommendations, and makes a ton of really good points! I found myself really encouraged to create more read-aloud time and to look past so many of the common excuses: will I miss the literary themes myself, what if I don’t ask the right questions, what if they don’t like it, I only have 10 minutes, etc. Highly recommend!

3.5 ⭐️ - I’m not sure I agree with the classification of this as “satire”. This was a bit of an uncomfortable read - there are quite a few unlikable characters (including the main character for a portion of the book), and lots of blatant racial stereotyping and racism. It was a good narrative on being a Black man trying to make it in a majority-white work environment. So many mixed feelings on this one.

Loving others well and walking side by side with them through life is one of the best gifts we can give. This is especially true for those that are lonely, going through a hard time, or dealing with deep personal struggles. Edward T. Welch starts his book by showing that the realization of our own neediness can help us see how much more deeply we’re needed by those around us. The premise of this book was really great. Some of the points were a bit basic (like how to greet someone), but overall made me think about how to meet people where they’re at.
