Not quite as good as Still Alice, but Lisa Genova still does a great job at tackling a difficult medical condition. For the full review: http://erraticprojectjunkie.blogspot.com/2013/01/left-neglected-by-lisa-genova.html
I really enjoyed this book. I had a lot of people telling me they had heard bad things about it so I admit that I did feel a little nervous at first. But for me the story moved smoothly and the plot was excellent. There were some more graphic and violent scenes that probably turned off the readers who didn't like the book, but to me it didn't outweigh the good writing. It's hard to review a translated book and say that the writer is excellent, but I assume that the translator stayed true to form. If not, the translator needs to start writing books! Let's put it this way...I had planned on reading a specific book after I finished this one. Instead, I am now reading the second book in the trilogy.
4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed her writing style. She's extremely good at description without making it feel pretentious. I was terribly confused about a few things during the plot (which I'm sure will make sense once I finish the series) and this is one of those books where I'm very frustrated by the cliffhanger ending. I'll be needing to read the sequel a lot sooner than I had anticipated.
I really enjoyed this book. It follows the life of a dog through several reincarnations as he builds to find his purpose. I don't believe in reincarnation and I found the narration from the dog a little awkward at first, but I came to really enjoy the story. Both the good and the bad of humanity are represented in their interactions with the dog - or those surrounding him. The balance was very well worked out. There were pieces of my own pets that I could identify with in the actions of the dog as he continued his journey - I think that made me love the story even more. I became hooked after the start of the second lifetime and I struggled to put the book down. Though somewhat fantastical, the charm of this book overwhelms the need to be practical and realistic. I found that I didn't mind the fact that such a story was far fetched. It was beautifully written. I will definitely read this book again.
I am apparently on a run of post-apocalyptic YA fiction. It's hard not to compare each series to the next. I enjoyed the new basis for government control...an interesting concept. Well written and easy to read. I'm jumping straight into the second in the series.
I really love Philippa Gregory's books. She is absolutely wonderful at mixing historical fact and interesting fiction. The only issue I had with this book is that I frequently found myself confused at the characters. Not that it's really any of Ms. Gregory's fault, but at this time everyone in England appears to have the names George, Richard, Edward, Elizabeth or Anne. It makes things all very confusing.
Very cute book. I loved Dora...even if her name bothered me. Definitely chick lit with a few whiny flaws, but overall a great read and an endearing story. I would read it again. For the full review: http://erraticprojectjunkie.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-secret-lives-of-dresses-by-erin.html
I'll be honest...I think seeing the 2nd Sisterhood movie totally wrecked this book for me. True...it's kind of a hodgepodge of books two and three along with some changes, but I felt like it just made this less surprising. It was a bummer. But...true to form, I loved the writing. Ann Brashares just writes a darned good book. It was cute and sweet...and I love her characters. Lena will always be my favorite (and not just because Alexis Bledel plays her in the movie).
