I didn't really internalize anything about this book. I couldn't tell you anything of importance in the plot. Felt like I was skimming half the pages without even meaning to. Interesting concept, poor execution.

I actually liked the narration style, and there's some really good prose in this book. It's definitely a slow burn but I found it had little payoff. While the reveal wasn't what I was expecting at all, it didn't leave me feeling gross, disturbed, or unsettled as it was marketed that it would. I'm giving it points for the writing and the unexpectedness of where this goes, but was a little disappointed.

I'm conflicted about this - Sylvia Plath is obviously a good writer and the narration in this book is superb. It flows nice and has some great quotes. It's also a great introduction to feminism in it's early years and the way Esther talks and interacts with men is interesting and funny. The discussion of mental health and the reality of the mental hospital was also important.
I also felt like Esther was superrrr annoying and not in a relatable way - it made it hard to read. She's very into virginity and being pure and looks down on others who aren't like her. She just generally hates everyone around her.
I also felt like it was really slow paced and at times boring. I only really got into it the last quarter. Even then I just wanted to be done with it. There's also many casual racist moments throughout the book that made me really uncomfortable to read. It ruined some of the moments that could have been good for me. I think I'd like more of Plath's poetry more. I appreciate this as a classic, but it didn't click for me.
