I actually liked the narration style, and there's some really good prose in this book. It's definitely a slow burn but I found it had little payoff. While the reveal wasn't what I was expecting at all, it didn't leave me feeling gross, disturbed, or unsettled as it was marketed that it would. I'm giving it points for the writing and the unexpectedness of where this goes, but was a little disappointed.
