competencefantasy's Reviews (912)

Wow. Where did this come from? It's essentially the perfect political fantasy bite. The characters are memorable even in the short length and the cadence is breathtaking. Now if you'll excuse me I am off to feel feelings.

Update: Read it again. More feelings. And historical tie ins.

I am in so much love with this series. I want dozens more series like this. I want this to be as overdone as GOT or LOTR. I want to curl up with this at night and write fanfic for it. I am easy for this sort of thing ok.

a lot like the imperial radch trilogy.
for most of the book somewhat denser worldbuilding but not as into the characters

then in the last hundred pages.
woah
um so is there another. like. now?

A really solid first outing with some societal worldbuilding elements that worked well for me. Not 100 percent on the pacing or the thematic resolutions but did like the general themes plotting and characters. Will look out for the next one by this author.

This is a solid second entry and fixes some of the pacing problems with the earlier installment. It's fast paced with memorial characters and dramatic situations. It often feels like a YA novel, which is odd considering the massive amounts of violence and the sex scene. There's some strange anachronism and I don't feel like worldbuilding is a focus. Still I immediately put a hold on the next one so it must be what I need right now.

Queer folks in the new west

Well this is on the nose for me. I almost feel like I should take off for being so exactly what I wanted that it didn't have a lot of surprises. However I am trying to get through this screen so I can see what else the author did so that ought to tell you something. Fair warning that if you are in the no happy ending for my kind stage of queer especially if nonbinary or sapphic buckle up for additional feels.Might come across a little preachy if you're far enough past that stage.

This is the kind of retelling that expands the story considerably beyond the original, and does thematic work, rather than trying to make everything match to the typical interpretation. As a result it can seem off canon even when it's not. It gets very... feminist metaphysicsy for lack of a better term. The author clearly knows the reference very well, and the sections with Sarai were my favorite. However, I'm only about 90 percent that the ending stuck. The good parts were excellent however. I think it would make a good book club book.

Hilarious yet Arty

This is the big magical animal photography O was looking for. The composition of each photo is well chosen and interesting. I love how the water exaggerates the dog's features and individuality. Cute cheeks and terrifying teeth abound. This really cheered me up.

Just read Tumblr

It's alright.Yet it kind of reads like a midrange social media account. The writing doesn't hold me. The photos aren't magic. Shrug
