Don't Feed the Trolls

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

There’s nothing wrong with this book. I think others probably would like it. It revolves heavily around gaming. I’m not a gamer and it was hard to get into that storyline

Baby sapphic with a side of  “spice” who gets tangled up in a bad relationship.

Someone else’s review mentioned this was their first LGBTQ read. To them, I’m sorry and I hope you didn’t think this representation was normal. Same goes for the polyamory and BDSM representation, this was
bad and not acceptable. I wish that had been addressed better in the story. It would’ve been great if someone had explained that what was happening was bad because consent is mandatory. I wish they hadn’t mixed BDSM and/or polyamory with an abusive relationship. It could make it look like that’s part of BDSM and polyamory when it is definitely not

This was such a good, yet hard, read. Not hard as in complicated, but hard as in the emotional toll of the content.

I didn’t realize I was diving into a “pray the gay away” story. It was hard but I just loved Evan so much.

I really enjoyed the writing style. It was like a chill conversation. This was a cute yet sad story that really makes you reflect on life.

A cute story. Depth is added with stuff like newspaper clippings and letters.

This one was a tearjerker for the last 13 chapters. I did enjoy though that there are 69 chapters 😆

Straight white author writes queer biracial characters 🤨

I guess I appreciate the representation exists in a way that will get in front of people who may not otherwise read books with diversity.

Is it good? Yeah. Would I rather read biracial queer characters from a biracial queer author? Yes

Honestly, I hated it. Though, that doesn’t mean it was written poorly. The writing was great. I was driven to finish the whole thing in one sitting. It was sick, twisted, and disgusting.

I know people who are as stubborn in their views as this Officer. People who are willing to literally “die on a hill” for their belief in something. I’m hoping this was a sick metaphor for that? But I’m not convinced.

Some thoughts while reading:
  • I hate it.  I demand a refund. What sick person wrote this?
  • I’m mad. This is torture... well duh, yeah we knew that. Ugh
  • Is it a sick metaphor for teaching the bystander effect???

When I got the book, I didn’t realize it was non fiction and a memoir. Neither are something I’d normally choose to read. I still thought it was cute.

Cute memoir told in comics. I like how things are a little scattered and then finally come together. It’s like how our memory really works.

Not sure it was acceptable at the time, but there is wording that is definitely not acceptable by today’s standards. There is reference to acting autistic and some suggestions of transness.

Cute cute cute! This book is so dang cute! Blog posts, texts, and letters all add depth to an already adorable story.

Before I even started the book, I just knew I was gonna love it. If I hadn’t been sure, the dedication would’ve solidified it.

To everyone who’s ever felt too mixed, too Black, too queer, or too trans to have a happily ever after — here’s your permission to make your own

Trans, gay, bi, ace, androphilia, lesbian all in one story! Never did I think I could find a book with such good queer representation and so much of it. Finding realistic and deep representation isn’t always easy.

LOVED how smooth the transitions were with pronoun changes. This is the first book I’ve seen with a characters that use xe/xem/xyr and  e/em/eir

I had high hopes for Emery’s debut book and they delivered! I will forever be a fan of their work.

Some quotes I enjoyed:

Infinite gender map (pg 225)

“You don’t want kids?”
“Why would I want something I have to pay for that’s also pretty much guaranteed to give me clinical depression?” (Pg 236)
