- Lesbian. Dark. Academia. Need I say more?
- Okay okay, I'll say a little more. I loved falling into the history and mythology of Dalloway with Felicity. A LESSON IN VENGEANCE had me second guessing myself, mistrusting everyone, and watching helplessly as the train jumped the tracks.
- I have some minor quibbles with the pacing, but when things get going, they REALLY get going. There are a couple points where new information is dropped and my jaw dropped along with it.

- Particularly, the emphasis on the fact that someone getting tangled up in fringe religious groups or MLMs isn't necessarily a sign of stupidity or gullibility, rather that these organizations have carefully calibrated their pitches to bring in the most driven, committed people.
Graphic: Child abuse, Death, Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, Sexual violence, Suicide, Toxic relationship, Violence, Trafficking, Gaslighting

- Ines is a bit of a disaster bi and I think many readers may not like her. Additionally, the plot takes its time getting going, but the imagery and atmosphere along the way was worth it for me.
- Also, so many people told me nothing happens in this book, which...did we read the same book? So much happens! There's just a lot of drunken partying inbetween plot points, which, as someone who attended a small, cultish college, feels accurate.

- Keefe is so good at discussing complicated people and topics in a conversational, easy to follow way.
- Even if you already know the basics of this story from news reports or other books like DOPESICK, I'm willing to bet there are still anecdotes in this book about the callousness of the people involved that will shock you. You think you know how greedy people can be, and yet.
- Also, this is a sort of irrelevant side note, but if this was fiction I would have dinged the author for seemingly transparently lifting Richard Sackler's personality from the characters in THE SECRET HISTORY, haha.
Graphic: Addiction, Child death, Chronic illness, Confinement, Death, Drug abuse, Drug use, Infidelity, Suicide, Forced institutionalization, Antisemitism, Medical content, Grief, Suicide attempt, Death of parent
- I can't speak to how realistic the portrayal of life with diabetes is, but much of this book is about Lizzie overcoming her internalized ableism in regards to her diagnosis - something you don't see much in books, let alone romance novels.
- Also, Hibbert clearly loved a high stakes, high drama plot in her earlier work. Blackmail! Family secrets! Running out of time!

- Time for a QUEER SCREAMING review! Adoptive moms! Bisexual heroine! Sapphic longing! Magic! Plants! Mystery! Mythology! THIS POISON HEART is twisty and suspenseful and full of incredible imagery and I loved every page.
- I loved watching Briseis come into her power while she unraveled family secrets. I also loved that her moms were so loving and engaged - so wonderful to see in a YA novel.
- I've always been a big fan of Greek mythology, and it was great to see some of the women who often get pushed aside in those stories get the spotlight.
- Let's also talk about how most of this book took place in a small town that was in the midst of defunding its police department and sent a social worker out on distress calls!
- THAT CLIFFHANGER THOUGH. I need the sequel!

- Everything from fatcalling to open bias from healthcare providers is covered in this book. Gordon makes it absolutely clear how being fat influences everything she does and how virtually every single person interacts with her, usually not in a positive way.
- Anti-fat bias is so ingrained in our culture (and getting worse, according to this book), and Gordon lays out the multifaceted approach we need to take to uproot it and make life accepting and accessible for all bodies.

Moderate: Emotional abuse, Homophobia, Panic attacks/disorders, Transphobia
- This collection of essays lays out many of the traps society sets for young white women, ranging from how your body is never right to trying to be the "cool girl."
- I thought a lot of this book does a good job talking about how even if you didn't have an easily-labeled traumatic event in your childhood, your experiences can still have long lasting effects, and it can take years to understand how you learned to compensate and change yourself to cope.
- I found it to be a bit overly long for a book of essays, but worth seeking out if you're looking to fill time between Lindy West books or if you're looking for stories about having that feminist awakening.
