this is book is plotless with flat characters yet i could listen to the audiobook forever. it’s possibly the most atmospheric book i’ve ever read and the narrator did a stellar job. i truly felt transported to this cruel, beautiful world. i even slowed the audiobook speed down (i usually listen at 2x or faster) just to appreciate the narration.
so yeah. 4 stars, and 2.5 of them are for the audiobook.

the audiobook is available on spotify.
you know what to do.

it’s amazing how much Jemisin had grown as a writer. if you’re new to her books, i recommend starting with the fifth season.
in the hundred thousand kingdoms, you have her unique writing style, great discussions of colonialism and oppression, and an actually well-written sex scene. (well, mostly.)
but you also have unmemorable characters, deus ex machina, and a world that seems hidden behind a veil (or weak descriptions).
i’m curious enough to continue the series (also i bought all three books), but this is nothing groundbreaking.

faltou uma revisão e edição mais rígidas. dá pra ver que é o primeiro conto da maioria das autoras.
meu favorito é o de ficção cientifica <3

this book is everything to me.
this is a coming-out story about someone who’s aromatic asexual—aroace. i’m aroace spec.
i’ve never seen myself so well-represented in a book. everything Georgia went through—the fake crush on someone who was conveniently hot just to say you have a crush on someone, the feeling that once you got to uni everything would be different and better and you would grow up and do the whole romance shenanigans, the nauseating reaction to getting physically close to someone—that’s my life. i’ve been through all that. this book made me feel seen.
and on a literary level, this is an Alice Oseman book, so you know what to expect: lovely friendships, realistic writing, well-rounded characters.
it gets a bit repetitive halfway through, and some parts were a tad too soppy for my liking. like every coming-out book i’ve ever read, it can be preachy and predictable at times, but that’s to be expected, i guess. i wasn’t too troubled by it.
pick it up if you want to know more about the aroace spectrum. pick it up if you want a book about the importance of friendships. pick it up if you want a damn good story.

like a trekker, i was really excited at the beginning, dragged myself through the middle, and ended it feeling itchy and very tired, yet satisfied. some things at the end bothered me immensely, but i'm hoping it will be explained in the sequel. (please. i don't want to cancel this series.)
