The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
by N.K. Jemisin
it’s amazing how much Jemisin had grown as a writer. if you’re new to her books, i recommend starting with the fifth season.
in the hundred thousand kingdoms, you have her unique writing style, great discussions of colonialism and oppression, and an actually well-written sex scene. (well, mostly.)
but you also have unmemorable characters, deus ex machina, and a world that seems hidden behind a veil (or weak descriptions).
i’m curious enough to continue the series (also i bought all three books), but this is nothing groundbreaking.
